The Town Hall entertainment, Events and Exhibition Venue at Bishop Auckland, Co Durham.

THE Town Hall of Bishop Auckland in Co Durham is now a major events and entertainment centre, which offers something for everyone. There plays, music of all types, comedy, workshops, films, lectures and exhibitions.

Plays have included productions by both professional and local amateur troupes. Recent productions have included Bouncers, The Last Waltz, Beef and Doctor Faustus.

Bishop Auckland Theatre Society has staged Kiss Me Kate and Calamity Jane.

Music events have ranged from folk through tribute acts and concerts to classic recitals and opera.

Such regional giants of folk as Jez Lowe and duo John Tams and Barry Coope have appeared at the hall.

Internationally acclaimed jazz guitarist Martin Taylor has given one of his electrifying performances there and there are monthly lunchtime concerts.

There are various celebration events, including the Christmas Carol Service, an Edwardian Christmas, Burns Night Folk Concert and St Patrick’s Day Celebrations.

Tribute acts have been Madonna, the Impostor Beatles and Elvis on Tour.

The hall hosts both the annual Bishop Auckland Town Quiz in support of the Great North Air Ambulance Service and the Children in Need Folk Concert.

Workshops have been held on printing and crafts, etch a sketch, wacky witches and the big draw.

A weekly tea dance is held and both the Evergreens and the Laurel and Hardy Appreciation Society hold their meetings in the Town Hall. The Wear Valley writers meet there every week and a Book Buddies session for the youngsters is also held.

There have been talks by local experts on Amberdale, lead mining in Teesdale and Weardale and the Roman Fort of Binchester.

Local people are able to see the latest films in the hall. There is really something for everyone
