A review of Brasserie 1883 in Newcastle upon Tyne.

BRASSERIE 1883 is a cosy and intimate restaurant that is close to the famous Long Sands at Tynemouth.  It has a 1970s style funky decor with brash floral brown and gold wallpaper.  The are dark wood tables and floor with retro chocolate coloured pendant lamp shades.  Many of the local paintings that are on display are for sale.

Brasserie 1883 serves gastro-pub cuisine with an emphasis on using good quality, local in season ingredients.  The menu is heavily slanted towards fish.  It offers a bright and cheery welcome and the serving staff a efficient, yet relaxed.

A favourite starter is the crispy potato caked served on a Greek salad of Feta cheese, red onion, green pepper and mint.  The patties of creamed bubble and squeak with bacon and poached egg is almost as popular.

Many diners opt for the free-range chicken, ham and leek pie with baby carrots, snap peas and mashed potato.  The grilled gammon with fried egg, chips and a piquant pineapple sauce is to die for.

It  is open from noon to 14:30 and 17:00 to 21:30 on Tuesday to Saturday and noon to 15:00 on Sunday.  Brasserie 1833 remains closed on Mondays.

There is a pay and display car park on Front Street but Brasserie 1883 is only partially accessible to disabled diners.

Brasserie 1883 is at 3-5 Percy Park Road in Tynemouth and can be contacted on 0191 257 8500.
