A guide to Chester Zoo in Cheshire.

The Zoo at Chester on the River Dee in Cheshire is considered by many animal authorities to be the country’s number one charity zoo. It was presented with the Good Britain Guide Zoo of the Year award in 2003.

Chester Zoo, which is home to 500 different species containing over 7,000 animals, offers an exciting and interesting day out for the entire family. Considering itself to be the Zoo of the 21st Century it offers an impressive array of big attractions, both of the zoological type and of other varieties.

It has long been renowned for its spacious enclosures, which are set within an area covering 110 acres of prize‑winning gardens.

Many of the animals are housed in special collections or exhibitions. The ‘Bears of the Cloud’ forest features the zoo’s latest collection of ‘Spectacled Bears’, while ‘Dragons in Danger’ recounts the plight of the great lizards throughout the world.

Chester Zoo has built up a large collection of Miniature Monkeys and its latest attraction is the huge herd of Red River Hogs.

It is not only on the ground that people can tour Chester Zoo. They are able to take to the treetops on the ‘Zoofari Overhead Railway’, or the Waterbus will transport them on a leisurely cruise through the park. Then there is the ‘Rainbuster Route’, which has been specially designed so that visitors will dodge all the showers on a rainy day!

Chester Zoo has step‑free access to all the major parts of the attraction, including toilets, shops and refreshments. The toilets are fully accessible, with level access, grab reins and lateral transfer space for wheelchair users. The park has wheelchairs available for either loan or hire.

The zoo offers facilities, services and information for visitors who are blind or partially sighted and guide dogs and sensory dogs are welcome. Similar facilities, services and information are provided for visitors who are deaf or who have a hearing impairment.

Chester Zoo is open from 10:00, 7 days a week throughout the year with the exception of Christmas Day. Closing times vary according to the season. There is free car parking and the entrance fee helps to fund the care of the animals in the zoo as well as supporting endangered species throughout the world.

The zoo, which is just off the A41, is well sign‑posted from the M53, J10, J12 and J14 Roads.  Coach parties have always been welcomed at Chester Zoo,
