A review of the queen’s Head at Great Whittington in Northumberland.

The Queen’s Head in Great Whittington, Northumberland is an old coaching inn, which has become renowned for the quality of its classic English country fare.  It has a small bat that is always lively with animated conversation.

Its decor is traditional with stone walls and exposed ancient beams.  However there are many contemporary colours and features.  There is always a genuine warm welcome and the serving staff are attentive and efficient.

The home-made duck spring rolls with a plummy hoi sin sauce and julienne strips of carrot, cucumber and spring onions are delicious as is the excellent avocado and prawn salad.

I enjoyed the liver and bacon with sautéed potatoes in an onion marmalade.  Many diners opt for the roast chicken breast, chucky roast potatoes, beetroot, shallots and baby parsnips.

Desserts include a tasty blueberry pie with rich clotted cream and a fabulous raspberry and pink champagne trifle.

The Queen’s Head is open for food from noon to 14:30 and 18:00 to 21:00 on Wednesdays and Thursdays, noon to 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays and noon to 18:00 on Sundays.

There is both a car park and roadside parking outside the Queen’s Head.  Unfortunately due to a number of steps, not all areas are available to disabled clients.

Great Whittington is north of Corbridge on the River Tyne and can be contacted on 01434 672267.
