CRUISING THE CANAL NORTH Yorkshire offers many ways for the tourists to enjoy themselves. I recently discovered one of the newest ones. Pennine Boat Trips of Skipton has come up with the idea of tourists enjoying the quiet of the 200 year old Leeds and Liverpool Canal. There are two different types of trip. The most enjoyable is the fun self-drive motor boats that can be hired for periods of 30 minutes or one hour, during which the visitor can be their own skipper and are able to enjoy the canal at their leisure. These are five-seater boats, that are both fun and safe to drive and meet all the UK and European health and safety regulations. They have only a steering wheel and an accelerator, making them extremely simple to operate and they are quiet. This allows visitors the opportunity to fully delight during their time out on the canal. Pennine Boat trips provide full instructions and life jackets to ensure the safety of visitors. The hirer must be 18 years of age or over and must accompany the boat at all times. Self-drive motor boats are available from 9.30am until dusk throughout the year. The Coobbydale: a motor launch runs public trips from the old market town of Skipton, through the beautiful Yorkshire Dales to Niffany or Snaygill on most days. It is fully weather-protected with central heating for those rather fresh Yorkshire spring or autumn days and there are toilets on board. Coobbydale has a well-stocked bar on board as well as offering tea, coffee and mineral drinks. The captain gives an interesting and informative commentary as the vessel sails along the canal. Tickets must be collected 30 minutes before sailing time and there is a talking timetable available on 01756 701212. The Dalesman is another motor launch, which provides the ideal setting for private functions, business and corporate entertainment, club outings, weddings, coach parties, anniversaries, senior citizens’ events or Christmas and New Year celebrations. People are able to hire the Dalesman for all those special family celebrations and the brochure contains a list of all the delicious menus.
