A review of London’s Dorchester Hotel.

DORCHESTER OPULENCE. THE Dorchester Hotel in London has long been famed for its luxury and style. The present 250 roomed hotel stands on the site of the 19th Century hotel, which was demolished in the early 1930s. The promenade, which leads from the grand lobby into the heart of the hotel has a series of intimate, romantic spaces on either side. There is some original modern artwork in the Audley Suite, which also boasts a designer four-poster or tester bed and a pumpkin coloured dressing table. One of my favourite features was the massive and private cocktail bar. Cuisine is brilliant in the Grill, one of the Dorchester’s many restaurants. The seared scallops with cauliflower puree and a small sardine pie makes a delicious if unusual starter. All the menus celebrate the very best of British food. I went for the Scottish wild salmon with crispy asparagus, lobster bisque and bubble and squeak. I followed this with a brandy souffle with sage sorbet. I finished the evening on the suite’s balcony, looking over the skyline while sipping champagne. The bar had one of the most comprehensive list of cocktails that I have ever seen. Yes! The Dorchester Hotel still lives up to its long time reputation for luxury.
