Food in a Northumbrian Pub

The Dyke Neuk at Meldon near Morpeth is a traditional country pub which serves British cuisine with a few additions.
There is always a true Northumbrian welcome and the serving team is super efficient.
Its decor is Northumbrian sandstone, brocade curtains and crisp linen. There are fabulous views over the rolling Northumbrian countryside from the windows.
There is a wonderful starter in the devilled whitebait served with shredded lettuce, mayonnaise and a squeeze of lemon. The spicy tomato soup with an oven-fresh bread roll is really delicious.
I liked the casserole of Northumbrian rabbit in a sauce of cider, sherry, sage, mushrooms and peas and accompanied by new potatoes, steamed carrots and, mange tout and broccoli. Many diners opt for the sizzling chicken and beef Shanghai served with chips or rice.
The sticky toffee pudding with ginger sponge, sweet dates, nuts, butterscotch sauce and ice cream is to die and there is an equally delicious chocolate strawberry shortbread.
It is open for food from 17:00 to 21:00 on Wednesdays to Saturdays and noon to 16:00 on Sundays. Bar meals are available from noon to 21:00 seven days a week.
The Dyke Neuk has a large car park and it fully accessible to disabled diners.
It stands on the Hartburn road about four miles due west of Morpeth and can be contacted on 01670 772622.
