Low Budget Scottish Holiday Retreat

Credit crunch is hitting us all hard, but low budget can still buy a holiday retreat in coastal Scottish villages without cutting down on comfort.

For those of you who are feeling the tightening of your money belts, and worried you will be forfeiting your annual break away, try a Scottish coastal retreat.

I just rented a 3 bedroom original fisherman’s cottage in a coastal village called St Abbs in the Scottish boarders. Giving up my normal 2 weeks in sun due to finances, I was not particularly looking forward to it. The only images I could cunjure up was me being freezing cold, trying to sleep in an uncomfortable bed and being absolutely bored out of my mind. I couldn’t of been more wrong.

The cottage was absolutely beautiful, so comfortable and really well equipped. It had obviously been gutted out at some point, then loving re-designed. Plenty of space, yet cosy and relaxing. The same standard of property I would of paid in the region of £900, which I have in other areas in the past. This cost me £220, an unbelievable bargain.

From the front door, 15 steps away unvailed a breath taking costal line, with rock formations which changed throughout the day as the sun moved. The sea was a deep blue colour which, again changed at times to a greenish blue colour.

The village itself was mainly residential, with a small shop which served many purposes including post office, general store and wool shop, which only open between 10am till 4pm. This was slightly difficult for the first couple of days whilst trying to live with the idea of going without our 24 hours services. It felt that we had gone back 20 years in time, but in a good way.

All in all, it was definitely value for money and if I hadn’t of needed to watch the pennies, I would of missed out on such a great holiday.
