A review of Sachins Indian Restaurant in Newcastle upon Tyne.

SACHINS in Newcastle upon Tyne has been an upmarket Indian restaurant for many years and this well-run restaurant has always offered the best of Indian cuisine in the North East of England.

The decor is an effective use of carmine and creamy beige with photographs of a tuk-tuk taxi rank.  It has a mixture of small areas with larger spaces for bigger groups and a room upstairs for parties and other events.

There is always a friendly welcome and the serving team is super efficient.

One favourite start is the Peshwari baked tikka: slices of spiced lamb on caramelised onion. The Chingi tandori: king Prawns and spices on an onion bed is equally popular.

The machhar jhol consists of monkfish fillets in a spicy onion and spinach sauce. There is also Mung Bhuna tikka of chicken breast in a rich onion and garlic base. Both dishes are accompanied by nutty rice and malai kofta: suet balls that are filled with nuts, peas and sultanas in a creamy sauce. The Peshwari nan bread is massive and folded and stuffed with ground almonds.  The nan is almost sufficient to be a filling meal in its own right.

Sachins is open from noon to 13:15 and 18:00 to 22:15 on Mondays to Saturdays.  It has a small car park and there is some street parking, though this may fill up quickly even there is a large event at the nearby Metro Arena.  The restaurant is not accessible to disabled diners.

It is on Forth Bank behind the Central Railway Station and can be contacted on 0191 261 9035.
