A review of the Barley Mow Inn, Gateshead.
THE BARLEY MOW INN AT BARLEY MOW VILLAGE Barley Mow Village is midway between Newcastle upon Tyne and Durham Centre, lying at the south end of Gateshead. The Barley Mow inn stands on the corner of Durham Road and Vigo Lane. It is a typical English pub that has always been well patronised. All its beers, stouts and lagers, especially its real ales are well kept and served in good condition at a reasonable price for the area. The barley as it is known locally also keeps a wide range of spirits, wines, soft drinks and non alcoholic beverages, The staff, who all wear livery, are invariably pleasant, courteous and efficient. It has an extensive menu and all food is freshly prepared, with much of it being home made. The meals range from starters through light bites, Sandwiches and pasta bakes to all day breakfasts, traditional English fare and silly steaks, quality steaks at low prices. Big Mal’s Mixed Grill of lamb chop, pork chop, gammon steak, black pudding, grilled tomato and chips is especially popular. Meals are served from noon to 19:00 on Mondays and Fridays, noon to 21:00 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, noon to 16:00 on Saturdays and noon until 15;00 on Sundays. The Barley Mow is especially busy at lunch times and early evenings when employees from nearby offices, factories and warehouses meet for lunch or an after work drink. t is a clean, warm, comfortable and welcoming pub, which is frequented by many good conversationists and the talk ranges over many subjects, including topics in the news, and there appears to be experts on most subjects. A turreted corner with panoramic windows gives good views in three directions. Musical entertainment, whether records from the 60s and 70s, singers or a karaoke is held on most Saturdays and a high level general knowledge quiz takes place at 20:30 on Sundays. The Barley Mow is competitive in sports with a football team that is doing well in the Gateshead Sunday League. A men’s darts team plays its games on Mondays with a women’s darts team playing and Wednesdays while a mixed darts team holding their games on Fridays. All three teams compete in the Birtley Town Darts League. A pools team has been started. More information on the Barley Mow can be obtained from 0191 410 4504
