A guide to the Discovery Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne.
THE Discovery Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne is the North East’s largest free museum
It was established by the amalgamation of various museums in Newcastle under the Tyne and Wear Museums Service
The focus is the Turbina, the world’s first steam turbine powered ship, designed in the city by Charles Parsons in 1894. She gatecrashed the Diamond Jubilee Navy Review at Spithead to prove that she was the fastest ship in the world/ Soon all the world’s navies were powered by steam turbines
People can get online in the free computer suite with educational programmes and Internet access
It has the Science Maze, a fun zone with interactive exhibits and large working engines. This area also features Tyneside inventions, including the earliest electric light bulbs
The People’s Galley is a display of work by local, showing real life experiences of living in the region
Fashion Works traces the history of textiles and fashion from glamorous gowns to modern teenage dress
Newcastle’s Story in the John George Joicey Museum follows the history of the city from the Romans to today, including dioramas of the greatest events
A Soldiers Story depicts the human side of army life in war and peace based on the experiences of two local cavalry regiments, the regular 15/19th Hussars and the territorial Northumberland Hussars
Family science activities are held on Saturdays. A free family funday with activities takes place from 14:00 to 16:00 on Sundays and regular activity days are held during the school holidays
Discovery is open from 10:00 to 17:00 on Mondays to Saturdays and 14:00 to 17:00 on Sundays all year except Good Friday, Christmas and Boxing Day and New Year’s Day
There is limited Pay and Display parking directly outside the museum which is a short walk from Newcastle’s Central Railway Station
Hot and cold refreshments are served daily in the café and the shop carries a wide range of fantastic gift ideas, both fun and educational for all ages
Discovery has flat access into the building and lifts to all floors. Each floor also has accessible toilets and changing facilities

Excellent introduction to a great museum. The building was designed by the prolific local architects Oliver and Leeson. Thanks for sharing.
