Royal Windsor must impress even the most jaded of visitors.
It is surely the very heart of England with its royal connections and mighty castle.
The Hart and Garter makes an idea base from which to explore this town. It was formed by the combining of two 14th Century hotels during the 19th Century. These were the White Harte, named after the royal emblem of Richard II and the Garter Hotel in honour of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, founded by Edward III.
It fits in perfectly with Windsor, due to its Jacobean style. However it has undergone a recent £7.5m refurbishment even has free wi-fi connections.
The suites are richly decorated and have massive bathrooms. Visitors can watch the Changing of the Guard from some of the balconies, which overlook Windsor Castle.
Many guests go on the Thames Cruise: a 40 minute trip with views of Windsor Castle, Eton School and Windsor Racecourse there are explanatory leaflets in addition to the informative commentary and some lucky cruisers have even spotted otters swimming in the river.
The Royal Windsor Railway Station, built in 1851, has been converted into a number of shops, which offer everything that even the most chronic shopaholic could wish for and there are some continental-style cafes to succour the inner person.
Back to the Hart and Garter Hotel, where the Tower Brasserie and Tea Room offers guests the acme of British cuisine.
A visit to the 900 year old Windsor Castle, helped by an audio guide is not to be missed.
The Hart and Garter Hotel can be contacted on 0844 600 8731.
