A review of the Red Lion at West Boldon in North East England.

THE RED LION INN, WEST BOLDON. THE Red Lion Inn at West Boldon is a cosy country-style pub that offers a warm and genuine welcome, backed by an attentive and personable serving staff. It serves modern British cuisine with some special touches. It has a large selection of both agricultural and fishing equipment as well as a great deal of very collectable bric a brac. One unusual starter is Bloody Mary tomatoes on toast. Many customers opt for the scallop spring rolls with black pudding and apple sauce. The Red Lion serves an excellent whole baked sea bass with mango and chilli salsa. The vegetable casserole is braised in a rich gravy that is layered with rot vegetables and always served with a massive wedge of bread. Desserts include a treacle and orange tart or a delicious jam roly-poly with custard. The Red Lion Inn stands on the main road at the west end of West Boldon, near South Shields at the mouth of the River Tyne. It is open from noon to 15:00 and 17:00 to 21:00 on Mondays to Thursdays, noon to 15:00 and 17:00 to 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays and noon to 16:30 on Sundays. It is fully accessible to disabled patrons and has a large car park The Red Lion Inn can be contacted on 0191 536 4197.
