A review of the Ship Inn, Low Newton.

WALKERS, artists, day trippers and holiday makers have come to the Northumbrian fishing village of Low Newton by the Sea for generations. Many of these have enjoyed the hospitality of the Ship Inn. Now this charming pub has its own micro-brewery, the most northern one in England. Strangers to the region have to be careful in their route-finding as there are a number of Newtons in this area. Another snag is that The Ship operates as a restaurant only from 19:00 to 20:00 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The Northumbrian climate can be quite bracing and it is not the best weather for sitting outside at times, though the views are spectacular. Michael Heggerty has built is brewery to his own unique stands and currently brews five beers.

There is the Ship Hop Ale, a deep golden complex beer. Sand Castles is a pale aromatic beer, that is flavoured with coriander, while Dolly Day Dream is a ruby red premier ale. Sea Wheat, a 50/50 wheat beer has a taste of grapefruit and finally Sea Coal is a rich dark bitter/sweet complex beer. The Ship Inn has a lot of seafood, including lobster, on the menu and most of this is freshly caught by the local fishermen. Some of the finest of the sandy Northumbrian beaches lie north and south of this charming village of whitewashed fishermen’s cottages and the dramatic ruins of Dunstanbrugh Castle, the first one in England to fall to the effects of gunfire, are perched on the clifftops at the north end of the bay.
