The Sleeper Train to Penzance

by Frances Lawrence on 02/11/09 at 6:33 am

My husband is obsessed with trains, so it was no surprise when he suggested that we should travel by train on our honeymoon. The biggest surprise was that I enjoyed every minute of it.

We had the most amazing start to our honeymoon, we travelled by train to London Euston and then walked down to Kings Cross to have a look at Platform 9¾ of Harry Potter fame. After having a good look around the station my husband managed to drag himself away from trains for long enough to allow us to enjoy an afternoon and evening in London before making our way across to Paddington Station.

We had a first class booking on the Penzance sleeper, but it didn’t leave until almost midnight, so I had plenty of time to enjoy the wonders of the First Class Lounge. My husband got ‘ants in his pants’ and asked if he could go off and do a bit more train spotting, that was fine by me, I was happy to sit there and take in every detail of my surroundings, those rooms are incredible. The rooms were originally used as Royal Waiting Rooms in the time of Queen Victoria and they are beautiful. As I sat there enjoying a cup of tea, I tried to imagine how it would have been in the days, when Queen Victoria used the station when travelling between Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.

The sleeper journey was really special, travelling out of London in the dark made familiar landmarks look very different. Before long the excitement of the day caught up with me and I settled down to sleep in the surprisingly comfortable bed, but I made sure I was awake in time to enjoy the early morning part of the journey. ‘Sleeping beauty’ didn’t wake up until his breakfast arrived! It was still dark as we left Plymouth and crossed Brunel’s Royal Albert Bridge over the River Tamar, but the lights gave a dream like view along the river valley. One of the most magical moments was watching the sun rise as we came towards St Michaels Mount on our way into Penzance.

Well I have shared quite enough details about our honeymoon! The rest of the week was great too …… and it involved lots more trains!!
