The Yorkshire Wheel

The giant Ferris Wheel in York City.
I have always enjoyed visiting the ancient city of York. It has been a Roman legionary base and the capital of both Anglo-Saxon and Viking kingdoms as well as a major medieval city.
This means that its streets, lanes and gate are crammed full of history and this means that there is always something to see around every corner.
Now there is a totally new perspective from which to view this historic city, which still retains much of its Viking layout. The Norwich Union Yorkshire lets passengers have a bird’s eye view of York from 60 metres (198 feet) up in the air.
The Norwich Union Yorkshire Wheel has 42 air-conditioned pods, which each holds eight passengers and gives visitors some of the finest views in the country. The Wheel provides an unforgettable experience for the entire family.
The wheel, which opened at Easter, 2006 gives excellent panoramas of England’s largest county, over the Vale of York and across to the coast and the North Sea.
It operates from 10am to 6pm each day with the last ticket sale being at 5.15pm. No pre-booking is necessary for individuals or small parties, though groups of 20 or more must pre-book on 01904 686263, so that they can secure the free coach parking space and pre-booked entry. Tickets are available at the entrance to the nearby National Railway Museum.
There are a number of evening opening times available and these can be checked out on 01904 686282.
The Norwich Union Yorkshire Wheel and National railway Museum are just 540 metres (600 yards) away from York Railway Station. They are both well signposted from the city centre for pedestrians and from York’s Ring road for those visitors who are travelling by car.
