Things to Do in Edinburgh

For the tourist who wants to venture off the Royal Mile.

Are you a tourist who wants to venture off Edinburgh’s Royal Mile? Away from the Haggies-Tartan-Nessie filled shops? Here are some ways to enjoy this beautiful city through fresh eyes.

1. Arthur’s Seat

Standing at 251m, Arthur’s Seat is the main peak in Holyrood Park. Arthur’s Seat offers a 360° panaromic view of the city, limited only by your eye sight. The hill can be approached from almost any direction, the easiest route being from the East. If you are in Edinburgh over Guy Fawkes Night, be sure to gather at Arthur’s Seat to witness the throngs of students setting off fireworks.

2. Calton Hill

Because Calton Hill faces the east, it is the ideal place to watch the sunset over Edinburgh. Very Romantic. On top Calton Hill, you will find the National Monument, Nelson’s Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, the New Parliament House (the Royal High School) and the City Observatory. Catch the Beltane Fire Festival on 30 April and Tochlight Procession on 29 December each year.

3. Dean Village

Dean Village is situated to the west of the city center. This village is steeped in history and offers countless scenic views. Take a stroll along the Water of Leith which flows through Dean Village.

4. Portobello – Edinburgh’s Seaside

Portobello is Edinburgh’s beach resort. It’s 5km from the city centre and bustling with life! Visit the Portobello Community’s website for the lastest information on events. My favourite thing about Portobello must be the well-stocked arts and craft shops.

5. The Meadows

The Meadows is Edinburgh’s central open space. It provides sports men with a venue for jogging and various ball games and families with a chill out spot. Take a slow walk through the Meadows on a lazy weekend afternoon. For those with young children, there is a playground. However, keep to well-lit paths at night.

There you have it. Five ways to enjoy the city in an un-touristy fashion.
