The World War one was devastating, making the countries from across the world to built an army and participate in the World War. There were countries who had very huge armed forces while some did have small armed forces. Therefore, I have a list here where I have mentioned the top 10 countries with the largest armed forces and the countries with the smallest armed forces.

       Top 10 Largest Armed Forces of World War 1:


1. Russia
– 12,000,000 total at peak strength
2.Germany - 11,000,000 total at peak strength
3. British Empire (including Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, South Africa, etc) – 8,904,467 total at peak strength

4. France - 8,410,000 total at peak strength
5. Austria-Hungary – 7,800,000 total at peak strength



6. Italy - 5.615,000 total at peak strength
7. USA – 4,355,000 total at peak strength
8. Turkey - 2,850,000 total at peak strength
9. Bulgaria – 1,200,000 total at peak strength
10. Japan - 800,000 total at peak strength

Russia’s armed forces were relatively small in relation to the country’s population – some six percent, compared with 17 percent in Germany. Several other European nations had forces that were similarly substatial in relation to their populations: Serbia’s army was equivalent to 14% pf its population. In total, more than 65,000,000 combatants were involved in fighting some of the costliest battles – in terms of numbers killed – that the world has ever known.

Puts our present **commitment** in Afghanistan etc. into perspective. My 89 year old mum keeps saying: sad losses today but we lost MILLIONS in the world wars! Bigger armies, greater losses back then.
