What is the Second Highest Mountain in Great Britain?

by Quizologist on 22/07/09 at 5:40 am

This is a question that seems to cause a lot of problems for some people. They know Ben Nevis is the highest but what comes next?

A lot of people apparently think the answer to the above question is the Welsh mountain Snowdon.  In actual fact Snowdon is the 61st highest mountain in Great Britain with Ben Nevis and a considerable number of other Scottish mountains all of a greater height.  Snowdon can be properly described as the highest mountain in Wales, or the highest mountain in England & Wales but it is not by any stretch of the imagination the second highest mountain in Great Britain.

Ben Macdui (pictured), in the Cairngorms, at 4,296 feet (1,309 metres) in height is without doubt the second highest mountain in Great Britain and Snowdon at 3,560 feet (1,085 metres) is the 61st.  (A complete list from Ben Nevis to Snowdon is shown below)

This mistaken idea probably comes about because people often refer to the highest mountains in the constituent countries – Ben Nevis, Scotland; Snowdon, Wales and Scafell Pike, England – at the same time and events like The National Three Peaks Challenge bring these three mountains into prominence.
