A Fuss-free Guide to Backpacking

Ready to throw it all in for a grand international adventure? First you must read this to get the scoop on the do’s and dont’s of backpacking.

So you’ve decided a backpacking adventure is just the thing. You’ve made all the plans and started saying you’re goodbyes, but before you hop on the plane let’s make sure you have every little detail taken care of. You don’t want your dream trip to to end up being a travel insurance case study.

The most important decision to make is where to go. Developing countries offer adventure at a budget price but can be tough going. If this sounds like just the thing, head to South America or South East Asia. If you’re a little more cashed up then Europe is a backpackers dream. All the major cities are close together, you can see everything without travelling crazy lengths.

Secondly you’ll have to decide whether you feel comfortable going it alone or whether you’d feel better with friend in tow. Both have their pros and cons, but it really comes down to your personality. If you’re confident and outspoken flying solo will work for you, but if you have trouble communicating it might be too confronting. Remember though, if you’re going to be staying in hostels you’ll meet people along the way to do things with, so you won’t always be alone.

Finally don’t succumb to fantasy packing. If you don’t wear it at home you won’t suddenly start overseas. Pack plenty of basics and make sure you’re clothes can work in a number of different climates.

Do’s & Don’ts

Do contact everyone you know in the places you’ll be visiting. At the very least you’ll have someone to call on if you need help.

Don’t live your holiday through a lens. Make sure you’re experiencing things, not just documenting them.

Do learn as much of the language as you can. Even if you think most of the people will speak English it’s just good manners to try and speak the native language.

Don’t hang out with people you don’t like just for the company. It’s a waste of precious time.

Do consider working overseas. Just a few weeks apple picking can give you the funds to extend your trip by a few months. Just make sure you have the right Visa.

Don’t  freak out when you realize you’ve forgotten something. You can buy things things in other countries you know!

Do call your parents once a week or they’ll start imagining the worst.
