Birds are beautiful and have always held a fascination for man. Even before Icarus, people were watching birds and wanting to soar with the eagles up to the sun. Many of the early portrayals of gods show bird-like features and angels have bird wings, not bat wings.
Birds are beautiful and have always held a fascination for man. Even before Icarus, people were watching birds and wanting to soar with the eagles up to the sun. Many of the early portrayals of gods show bird-like features and angels have bird wings, not bat wings. Is it any wonder that some of the most popular destinations are those with birds or that birdwatchers are some of he most dedicated travelers around the planet? And many birdwatchers are just now venturing into the Caribbean.
hy now are birders starting ti explore the Caribbean? Has there been a sudden influx of new bird species into the region? The islands and countries of the Caribbean could only wish! Part is the economy, it is closer to home and so not as expensive in time or money. Also the birds are in relatively small areas, so easier to locate, meaning a quick trip gives results and then you can go back home to earn more money to do more birdwatching! Also, crime is low and most of the Caribbean has political stability.
Best places to vacation in the Caribbean for Birdwatching can depend upon you and your time. Costa Rica and Belize are fantastic with many Eco-lodges located in the rain forests. You can literally drive to your cottage, sit on the porch and hundreds of brightly colored birds will flutter around the veranda. In some areas you can get macaws. In Belize, there is the rare King Vulture with a 5 foot wing span soaring over head, a prettier relative of the California Condor.
But with all those birds also come snakes and biting bugs, maybe you would rather not fight those Ferne-De-Lances or mosquitoes, then the best for you are some of the smaller islands in the Caribbean. Tobago is beautiful and, combined with Trinidad gets many of the South American birds. The Asa Wright and Caroni Bird Sanctuaries are must see for any true birdwatcher. You should still be careful as, because Trinidad and Tobago are close to the continent of South America, they do have a few dangerous creatures.
Further north you will come to St. Vincent, St. Lucia, and Dominica, each with their own rare species of Parrots and the only poisonous snake is the tiny coral snake, harmless to most people. Birdwatching on these islands is also excellent. Many of the other islands have been overdeveloped and densely populated, killing off many of their native species.
One other exception is in the Leeward Islands, Nevis. It is a safe destination with no dangerous creature, low crime and over a 140 different species of birds. It is also only 36 square miles, so easy to get around. Having never been hunted the birds are also not very afraid, so provide excellent photo opportunities as well.
