Great North Faces of The Alps

by NickFord on 18/10/09 at 7:51 am

These mountains have notoriety as being difficult to climb and make fantastic photos.

Six Alpine mountains are remembered among mountaineers as being particularly difficult to climb.  Their Northern faces are particularly rugged, and from my point of view make fantastic photos.

The revered mountains are :

1.  Tre Cime di Lavaredo  (2,999 metres (9,839 ft))

The three peaks, in the northern Italian dolomites are known for their battlement like appearance.  The north face was first climbed in 1933. During the First World War the front line between Austria and Italy was close. There are numerous fortifications and man made caves in the area.

2. The North Face of the Eiger 3,970 m (13,025 ft.)

The north face of this mountain in the Bernese Alps was first climbed in 1938.  In 2006 some 700,000 cubic metres of rock fell from the mountain.

3.The Grandes Jorasses (4208 m,13,806ft)

The Grandes Jorasses is a collection of mountain summits in the Mont Blanc massif in Western Switzerland.

The north face was first climbed in 1938.

4. The Aiguille du Dru (3,754 metres (12,316 ft)

This mountain lies in the French part of the Mont Blanc massif.  The north face was first climbed in 1935.  The mountain has suffered from serious rock falls in 1997, 2003 and 2005. The smaller peak Petit Dru shows clear scars from the rockfall.

The west face of this mountain is an even tougher climb. For a long time it was considered unclimbable.  The first ascent took place in 1955.

5. The Matterhorn (4,478 metres (14,692 ft))

This mountain is on the border between Switzerland and Italy.  The north face is 1,200 metres high and is one of the most dangerous north faces in the Alps, in particular for its risk of rockfall and storms.  Over 500 mountaineers have died on this mountain.  The north face was first climbed in 1931.

6. Piz Badile (3,308 metres (10,853 ft))

This mountain is in the Bregaglia range in southern Switzerland.  The north east face was first climbed in 1937.
