A new concept

An idea of spending time with our near and dear ones is always welcoming. And if we are fortunate enough to capture some moments of solitude with them, it is sheer bliss. Which is why, we all are on a hunting spree as far as the selection of an aesthetic place is concerned. Understanding this fact, these days, people are coming up with innovative concepts while building a hotel.

An uncommon, yet surreal, is the concept of an ice hotel which has captured the imagination of many. Ice hotels are manufactured in places where the temperatures can sustain them and remain in such a state for a longer period of time. It is for that added element of “out of the world feeling” which attracts the visitors.

A typical ice hotel is constructed with the help of a material known as “snice” which helps fix the blocks of ice. Together with the blue lights falling on the structure, it presents a unique sight. Constructed every year, these ice hotels are the dream destinations for everyone who wishes to escape the superficial city life.  And when there are so many regions on our planet which offer extremely cold climatic conditions, an ice hotel is not difficult to come up.

In Sweden

Sweden has got her share of an ice hotel which is constructed each year at the beginning of spring. The source of the enormous blocks of ice is the Torne river which flows nearby. The ice stored form the river is cut into the blocks and then used to manufacture the glasses and other sculptures.

In Quebec

The hotel is constructed each January and had about 85 beds when it started. The beds as of now, are lined with deer furs and the hotel has got specialized sleeping bags for its guests.

The hotel has been further beautified by the ice sculptures, which are some of the rare specimens of breathtaking pieces of art. A chapel and a club complete the scintillating picture.

Rest assured that ice hotels are here to stay. The concept got a fillip from the Inuit “igloos” which fired the imagination of many. Today, ice hotels are a visual treat with ice chandeliers and the lighting systems creating a beautiful aura inside the premises. There is so much to do.

The food is simple, yet served right there on the ice plates and the ice glasses are reserved to serve your most favorite drink. Besides other activities like sports etc. keep you engaged and relax deeply your mind. A way out of your daily doses of tension! Wot say!

The design

Artist and architects chip in with their expertise and create some of the most breathtaking forms on the ice. Virtual dreams, anyway!

With the beginning of the winter season, which might hover between November to December, work begins. The iron bars are laid in some specific angles and snow is allowed to settle on them. A few days and the rough portions of snow begin to acquire desired shapes.

Ice hotel rooms are given concrete shapes with the help of dividing walls, which are also constructed with the blocks of snow. The artists work tirelessly to create and construct each room so that the guests are provided with just the right kind of ambience.

Mainly, the work is completed in phases, which might require vigorous co-operation from everyone involved. For that, the nature in her best mood is an absolute necessity. Another important feature which is to be borne in mind, is the presence of a river nearby. This certainly helps in maintaining a regular supply of ice blocks which otherwise will be difficult.

Think of one more activity that can truly render memorable your ice hotel experience! Well if your are on your icy sojourn to Scandinavia, then surely a dog sledge ride to the giant “Igloo” we call an ice hotel, is the next best thing you would like to remember. And to top it all, the surroundings in the form of conical fir trees soothe the tired eyes.

The snow, the ice, the fir trees, that cold numbness in the very air of the premises outside the ice hotels, is truly “dream come true” for the visitors.
