Surfing Lombok is a great adventure with world class waves. Desert point is just one to name a few. Find out all about Lombok and how to surf here safely, and enjoy what this surf infested destination has to offer.

Surfing Lombok today is still a fantastic adventure wether you travel to your favourite break by boat or land.

Lombok information

The last count for the population of Lombok in 2005 was 2,950,105 and growing.  Lombok Island is a part of the Nusa Tenggara (PROVINCE) and it is linked to the Lesser Sunda Islands.  Lombok is separated from Bali by the treacherous Lombok straight in the west and the Alas straight to the east with Sumbawa just within visions range.

Top secret: There are some little inhabited islands in these straights that do have waves, when the conditions are right. I have passed them myself, but never seen these waves surfed.  The reefs are just so much better!

Lombok is quite a mountainous region and has the third largest volcano in Indonesia the Stratovolcano Mount Rinjini which stands a grand 3,726 m (12,224 ft), the latest eruption was in June 2009.

Surfing in Lombok and the people.

The main races are Sasak, Balinese, Chinese, Arab, Javanese and Sumbawanese and the religion is mostly Muslim.  The Lombok people are friendly to travelers as they provide a way to support their families through tourism

Surfing and terrorism

After the fall of Suharto in 1998 there was a worldwide foreign embassy alert to avoid travel to Indonesia.  Truthfully most surfers ignored these warnings and travelled on in search of the perfect waves that Indonesia provides.  Who can resist deep cleaning marching swells that spill on perfect reefs with trade winds?  You are virtually guaranteed waves if you can wait a week or two (perfect waves that is)

Indonesia is not 100% safe, but it never really has been.

Which is the safest way to Surf Lombok?

If you would like to surf the waves of southern Indonesia safely one way to do this is with reliable a surf charter.  Highly recommended is Dreamweaver surf Charters. As they have the knowledge to Lombok’s waves and surrounding area.  They also boast to be able to go where other boats can’t http://www.dreamweaver-surf.com

Dreamweaver will pick you in Bali and drop your off keeping you safe from any possible threats and Malaria, as mosquitoes don’t like to travel across the ocean.

Surf Lombok, where and when?

The best time to go surfing Lombok is in the Australian winter.  You can actually surf early and late season.

There are waves all year round in Lombok and if you know where to go then it’s all on for you.

The Main Surf Season in Lombok

Early season: April May

Late season: September October

General Surf Season:  Late May to August

Where to Surf?

The waves on this island and also surrounding Lombok are world class, without a doubt!  One classic all-time wave is the super famous Desert Point a super long left hand wave that can handle massive swells and provide some of the longest left hand tubes ride on the planet!

Don’t believe me then watch the video provided!

Other waves on Lombok

Belongas bay, Air Guling, Gerupuk,Ekas Bay.  There are many others, but Lombok is kept very secretive due to its hard terrain.  To get to the other secret locations you do need a boat, or just forget it.

Waves outside of Lombok

If you are travelling by boat these waves are well worth a check along the way and break from May to September.

Nusa Lembongan : Ship wrecks, Razors, Lacerations, Playgrounds.

Sumbawa west coast:  Just a short journey east from Lombok and can handle huge swells.

Scar reef, Super Suck and Yo Yo’s.  If there are no waves anywhere, you are guaranteed to get waves at Yo Yo’s.

So try your luck surfing Lombok I am sure you won’t be disappointed.  Plan ahead (do your research) and get your travel insurance.  Take plenty of spare batteries, mosquito repellent and travel light.  Drink plenty of fluids and most all enjoy those dam fine waves.
