The Five Weirdest Delicacies Served While Animals are Still Alive

by CHAN LEE PENG on 21/10/10 at 10:37 am

There seems to be no regretful feeling on the part of those who eat live animals and it has become a controversial debate. Still, these weirdest delicacies are still constantly served while they are still alive simply to savor one’s mouth or to satisfy one’s strange eating behavior. Does it sound hilarious and/or disgusting to you?

Babies’ animal Foods

Personally, I think these new born animal’s babies shouldn’t be considered as food to be served on the table. It’s a mistaken belief that eating these babies is nutritious for health. The list contains live babies of snakes and even a monkey’s brain in which their brain is cut alive with a sharp knife or knocks with a hammer while they have to suffer unbearable pain just to satisfy a human’s cravings for unusual dishes. Ironically, eating live animal foods are taken as taboo in certain cultures while animals are constantly tortured for fun and entertainment; or just to fulfill their inner desire. Animals like humans have right to live and shouldn’t be treated in such a cruel manner!

Ying Yang Fish

What happens when you see a fish as though crying in front of you and saying don’t eat me? This dish is served in a seafood restaurant and it’s served while the fish is half dead and half alive. It appears to be a half-cooked raw zombie being served together with its blood which is gradually soaked in sweet and sour sauce. Gazing at this delicacy, would you feel hungry anymore? It’s disgusting!

Ikizukuri

Usually, squids, shrimps, or fish is used to prepare this dish called ikizukuri, meaning literally as “prepared alive” in which the chef has to go against the clock to get this animal served alive on the table. Most of them are prepared in record time to leave them with nerves and organs twitching around the plate. It’s common to see the heart of theirs beating helplessly to satisfy one’s cravings. There has been an intense debate about this delicacy. Still, the practice of this dish exists as a taboo. Does this bizarre food sound delicious to you?

Sannakji

Sannakji is a popular live octopus dish that you can encounter with in Korea. It’s served with mild sauce and oil and it’s eaten while the octopus is still moving around the plate. You might be wondering how someone could place this crawling thing into one’s mouth. And yes, when come to eating things alive, it seems that the etiquette of table manner doesn’t exist. Sound scary?! Perhaps, putting this moving sensation into one’s mouth will add to strange behavior of human beings. This is so true that the tentacles of the octopus may cause a choking risk, while you may be encouraged to chew this moving octopus properly but there is always a strange feeling while this weird creature goes down your throat!

Casu Marzu

Well, this cake-looking delicacy seems pretty and delicious but something is moving there. Many maggots are invited to “have a party” inside this delicacy when the cheese is fermented to rotting. Not only maggots, but flies are allowed to lay their eggs there which begin chewing through to soften the cheese. Some crispy bread as well as thin strips of bread is in fact used to disguise the taste of living larvae while the time is ready for one to consume this zombie-cheese. One never knows that these larvae will get a chance to survive in one’s duodenum or intestine since they can tolerate the acidic environment of rotting cheese. Definitely, these maggots and larvae are more than happy to try to survive in one’s stomach.

Ouch!! As if the fish is begging/crying for help. Can’t take that. Have you heard about people eating human babies and fetuses? That’s so awful too. Humans or animals deserve some respect. We’re not the only creatures of God. I hope those people would somehow give some thought about it and use their conscience if not the heart.

If the octopus tentacles aren’t attached to a body anymore, do they feel pain and/or are they still technically alive? I don’t think that one should be included in this list of “live” delicacies. Also, although I agree that these dishes are cruel to animals, I would take you more seriously as a writer/researcher if you used slightly fewer emotional appeals.

We aren’t raccoons, we are human beings with the capibility for intelligent thinking and reasoning. I honestly do look down on people who eat these kind of things. Evolve already, you freaking savages.
