This is a complaint letter I emailed to American Airlines’ Customer Service after a trip back from Orlando to San Diego. Part I. I will publish their response in part II.

To American Airlines We left Orlando on July 4th and had a stopover (I forgot where) but didn’t get off the plane, and proceeded to San Diego. As we stayed inside the plane waiting for the other passengers to board, the crew was busy cleaning up. They picked up the trash, etc. etc. We saw, not just one, but 3 employees pick up the blue blankets from the now empty seats, neatly fold them, and stored them in the luggage compartments, and in the front compartment where the attendants greet you as you enter! To be re-used! I was aghast in shock! To be re-used. When we first entered the plane from Orlando, the attendants greeted us and was handing out blankets! My husband and I, and our daughter as well, took one each. They were not in plastic. But we took it anyway, thinking/assuming/trusting that it is clean.I have Stage IV breast cancer with metastases to the lungs and ribs. I am prone to infection. We try very hard to be very careful for me utilizing clean and sanitary things. I used the blanket from Orlando to the stop-over! I could have gotten sick, from the person who previously used it! I had the blanket over my face at times. This is unacceptable for hygiene and contamination purposes, especially incidents from swine flu or people traveling even when they’re sick. I would like to find out – do you have a policy in place for re-using blankets for passengers to use? Do you train your employees how to handle used blankets?
