Pay Toilets: Useful Information vs. Mere Joke
by Poetic Enigma on 03/03/09 at 3:51 am
I read in the local paper about some planes requiring a bit of money to be able to use the lavatory on a plane, however I am not sure if this is real or just a joke.

What if airlines added a toilet fee?
Granted, small airplanes don’t have the restroom accommodations, but what about the bigger planes that have restrooms? What if it became that you had to pay? Would you say that it wasn’t worth the pain of traveling? It would be awful to be 30,000 feet in the air and have to find 1.40 to pay for relief. Best forget your favorite beverages on the cart when they pass by.
I first read about this outrageous idea in a local paper. Ryanair, the head of budget European airline suggested that passengers may inquire to insert a pound coin to enter the lavatory while on board the plane.
Michael O’Leary, the airline chief, stated that installing pay toilets would lower ticket costs and make flying easier. However nobody was sure if he was being serious or trying to get free publicity.
He also stated that he’s sure everyone who got on board would at least have one pound, so it seemed like a fair amount to pay to use the restroom on board.
Spokesman Stephen McNamara stated, “Passengers using train and bus stations are already accustomed to paying to use the toilet, so why not on airplanes?”
All in all, I suppose it would be a benefit in lowering airfare, but is it as fair to those that use it? They are paying a bit more, but those that don’t use the restroom are still getting the same airfare deal.
If this ever were to take course then I would suggest being careful. Take a trip to the restroom at the airport before boarding the plane and then don’t drink a whole lot during the flight. That would be pretty tolerable. I’ve taken many flights and never once had to use the restroom during the flight. Even if you do drink one of the drinks they offer.

Yeah, I heard about this too. One option I guess is to bring your own jar onto the plane; or perhaps this creates a market for adult diaper products that are cheaper than the fee to use the airplane facilities. If I have to pay for food AND the use of the restroom, they’re hitting me at both ends. Ludicrous. Nice article!

This is the airline I use to fly to Italy to visit my mother. It is a two hour flight and I have never had to use the toilet on it before but I think people will think twice about buying drinks on the plane so they can avoid using the facilities. Nice article.

This is unfortunately typical of Ryanair, lure you in with ‘free’ flights and charge you for everything else, even paying on your debit card! I flew with them to Dublin last year, never again! Good article.

This is too funny and ridiculous business. I can’t imagine what people with disabilities would have to go through with this situation. I suffered kidney infections like mad when I was a child. I would hate for someone with the same issue to have to go through something like this on this plane carrier. Boy, you got me stirred up! Great read, it had all of my emotions going!

I try not to use the bathroom when I fly, they are usually nasty and small but I guess if they charged and I needed one bad enough I would have to pay. Just another way for airlines to make money. Good writing

I haven’t used one before but I would me really upset if I needed to use one that bad and I had to pay or if I really needed it and didn’t have the money…I hope this isn’t true.
