Travelling on a Limited Budget

Travelling is one of the great adventures in life but vacations can be expensive. Here we look at some of the ways you can travel without needing to build up a huge debt on your credit cards.

Before you choose a destination, think about where you want to go. Flying can be expensive but booking last minute deals can give you a good deal. Alternatively with some airlines you can find special offers and very low prices if you book well in advance. Check out what offers are available from your local airlines and you might find a great offer if you’re not too fussy where you take your holiday.

If there is nothing that appeals for a vacation or if the airlines are too expensive then you want to consider other methods of travel. Look at train and coach fares and which you can book in advance. Often you will get a good discount and a great deal on journeys with an early booking. If you can’t find a good deal, or want to get off the beaten track then renting a motorbike might be your answer; these offer a very low cost way to travel. You could even try hitch-hiking; this is reasonably safe if you travel during the day, is essentially free and can take you a long way.

Your accommodation is one of the other major costs for any vacation but there are ways to save here as well. If possible, staying with friends and crashing on their couch is, of course, the cheapest way to get accommodation. Couchsurfing.org presents a website dedicated to staying somewhere in just this way. Look at hostels in the area you are travelling to. You will have to share a room but it will save you a lot of money and you are only going to sleep there after all.

Camping might give you the answer you are looking for in your quest for cheap accommodation. If you bring your tent along this is both a fun and enjoyable and very low cost way to take your holiday.

You can save on the costs of meals on your vacation too. There’s no need to eat out at a restaurant every day on your holiday. Bring a camp stove and stock up at the local supermarket and you can cook for yourself. Get some cheese, crackers, and bread rolls at the supermarket as well – cheap food you can eat when you don’t want to pull out the gas stove. You can also have a lot of fun eating food from the wild if you know what you are doing; picking wild blackberries is fun and you will get much better tasting fruit than you would from many markets.
