Bizarre Eating Places: Safe Sex and Family Planning Themed Restaurants
by JK Kristie on 05/01/09 at 3:36 am
More than food, these restaurants were established to promote safe sex and family planning.
Dining for two, all-dwarf staff, release your rage and under water restaurants, and now here comes another not your everyday eating places: the safe sex and family planning themed restaurants in Thailand and Taiwan.
Banana Restaurant

Banana Restaurant in Taiwan is officially supported by Taiwan’s Center of Disease Control for safe sex and anti-AIDS promotions. This classy-looking place offers a variety of Western cuisine though two sets of dishes with names “one pillar holds up the sky” and “a hidden but beautiful world” creates a lot of waves. Each guest receives free condom and also enjoys a 20 percent discount on other condom purchases. Musical performances can be enjoyed during dinner and even condom jokes and question-and-answer contests. Banana Restaurant is located opposite La Cite fashion outlet mall in Taichung and is open from 11 am to 2 am daily.
Cabbages and Condoms Restaurant

Founded by local senator Mechai Viravaidya, founder of the Population & Community Development Association, Cabbages and Condoms (C & C) Restaurants helps fund population control, AIDS awareness, and a host of rural development programs. There are five restaurants around Thailand, with the main restaurant next door to the PDA Head Office in Soi 12, Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok.
There are several versions of how the restaurant got its name, one of the which is said to be that cabbages are a staple in Northeast Thailand and it’s grown and used in all villages. If condoms can be as common and used as often as the leaves, then some of the population and health problems of the country might be solved.
Food is mainly good quality Thai cuisine with wide choices including seafood with tastes slightly adjusted for foreign tastes making it one of the most popular restaurants in the country.
The world’s largest collection of national brand condoms is displayed on the walls and condoms are given for free in lieu of after dinner mints.

An interesting side line might be to offer vasectomies out the back while the ladies are in the powder room.

Hi, JK, how are you?
This is a pretty good article. ‘Tasty’ too. I actually thought it was a little funny seeing the picture of the banana after reading the title.
By the way,… you have ‘free’ one too many times in the last sentence: if it’s a free condom of course it will be given for free. You should take out either “free” or “for free” and leave just one of them in. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Westbrook, Lisa, Will, Denise, Rask, S A and Adam. Lol to Rask and thanks for the correction Adam. I guess I’ve overlooked that one. I’ll submit a fix. Thanks again.

That is so funny, I don’t think I would have such an appetite visiting these restaurants… “Condoms, babies, STI’s… hmm yes, I’ll have a side order of salad with that.”
