How to Have a Cheap Spring Break Vacation

Tips on how to save on a vacation by a broke college student.

With spring break coming up I’ve been thinking how badly I wanted to take a vacation. Being a poor college student anywhere far and luxurious is out of the question. So I started to think closer to home, and the idea of San Antonio popped into my head. Every state has a few vacation cities in their state, and if you can find somewhere around 5 hours away you can easily drive there and it won’t be that expensive. Plus money guides are saying skip on airline travel at the moment.

The first obstacle really is the hotel. Once you get that the rest is really downhill. The best thing to do with hotels is go to a discount hotel website. The site I used Last Minute Travel is a lesser known one but I got a better discount on it. The only issue with that site is it doesn’t tell you the name of the hotel till you book it, but if you click birds eye view on the map and get a close up you can see the street name and number and can just stick it in a search engine.

The next thing I did was start looking up at websites of things I wanted to do there. This is a really good way to figure out about how much it’s going to cost. It also shows if something you want to do is out of your price range before you get there and are disappointed you don’t have enough money to do it. If you are living in Texas I highly recommend San Antonio. Things you can do there are surprisingly cheap. Take the Alamo for example, is free, yes free. It runs on donations, so expect to give some money but technically the place is free. Another great thing to do is the Riverwalk boats which are less than 10 dollars a person.

The last thing that can be expensive but you might not think about is food. The broke college student has a great way to get around that. Bring food with you! Bread and peanut butter goes a long way. Most hotels have fridges and you could even hit a grocery store on the way in. It really does save a lot of money. What I like to do is plan one restaurant a day (dinner is best) and then the rest eat something from the grocery store. That way you aren’t miserable but you still save. Also never order room service! The food is always overpriced and not very good. Bring plenty of snacks to prevent the temptation of that.

So Spring Break is just around the corner and San Antonio here I come. I can’t wait since I’m in college I take summer classes and this will be the first vacation I have taken in a long time. I hope you are able to take my advice and get a chance to take a vacation of your own and if you do let me know where you go!
