World’s Most Unique Beaches

by nobert soloria bermosa on 11/10/09 at 1:08 pm

Beaches with sparkling, fine and white sands are considered unique and beautiful. Beaches like these are very popular and frequented by locals and tourists.

Come, join me, let us explore the beaches around the world and let’s find out why the lists of beaches below are considered unique!!!

Pink Sand Beach: Astwood Cove, Bermuda

As they always say, pink is pretty. Definitely, the unusual Pink Sand Beach in Astwood Park in Bermuda is not just pretty but also attractive and unique. It is one of Bermuda’s pink sand with clear, blue ocean waters which is very popular with tourists.

The place and surrounding waters are perfect for scuba diving and snorkeling. Bermuda or Bermuda Islands, also known as Somers Isles, is a British territory in the Atlantic Ocean.

Papakolea Beach: Hawaii, USA

If you think pink sand beach is peculiar, I would say, green sand beach is more unusual and rarer. One of the very few green sand beaches in the planet is Papakolea Beach in Ka’u district in Hawaii. This absolutely unique kind of a beach is also known as Green Sand Beach and Mahana Beach.

There are only two green sand beaches in the USA; the other one is located in Guam. Papakolea Beach gets it distinctive coloring from olivine crystals found in a nearby cinder cone.

The beach is believed to have been formed over 49,000 years ago and associated with the southwest rift of Mauna Loa. Since its last eruption, the cinder cone has partially collapsed and been partially eroded by the ocean.

The source of the green coloration of the beach sands, which is actually only several hundred feet long, is due to the olivine crystals which are winnowed from the eroding headland by the action of the sea.

HTO Urban Beach: Toronto, Canada

Most people go to beach to swim. So if you want to go for swimming, do not go to HTO Park, an urban beach located in Toronto, Canada. This beach which opened in 2007 is located minutes away west of Harborfront Center on Lake Ontario.

There are fixed umbrellas in the area and small showers were set-up for washing off sand from your feet BUT… swimming is prohibited.

At night, with its LED lights that illuminate the knoll, the park provides a splendid view.

Lake McKenzie Beach: Fraser Island, Australia

This beach located at Lake McKenzie in Australia is one of the most peculiar beaches in the continent. Lake McKenzie’s beach sand is nearly pure silica and it is possible to wash teeth, hair, and jewelry and exfoliate one’s skin. The lake is shallow with just over 5 meters deep.

Lake McKenzie, which is a popular tourist destination, is a “perched” lake sitting on top of compact sand and vegetable matter 100 meters above sea level. It also has one of the cleanest lakes in the world.

Fraser Island, where Lake McKenzie is located, is a unique island as well which is regarded as the world’s largest sand island with an area of 1,840 km².

Rose Sea in Mamoudzou, Mayotte

This is a view of the Rose Sea from the capital city of Mamoudzou. The picture of this beach will explain for itself why it is considered unique. Rose Sea is located in Mamoudzou, the capital of Mayotte, a French territory in the Indian Ocean.

Hot Water Beach: Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand

Hot Water Beach is a popular geothermal attraction in New Zealand. This unusual beach attracts 130,000 visitors each year. Its name comes from underground hot springs which filter up through the sand between the high and low water tidal reaches.

Tourists who want to experience the hot water of this one-of-a-kind beach simply dig large holes and relax and soak in the thermal water. Many visitors bring a spade and bucket with them.

South Haven Beach: Michigan, USA

This wide, sandy beach is located in South Haven Michigan. Looking at the picture, nothing seems unusual on this beach. This beach is not like the others, it’s actually a freshwater beach on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Palea Kameni Hot Spring: Santorini, Greece

Swimming in this unique beach will surely give you a unique experience because the water here is from a natural hot spring. Palea Kameni is a small island adjacent to the Nea Kameni Volcano Island.

Unlike the Hot Water Beach, the hot water of Palea Kameni is coming from underneath the sea. This peculiar beach is located in the Aegean Sea, between Italy of the Italian Peninsula and Greece of the Balkan Peninsula.

Haulover Beach: Florida, USA

Have you ever thought of going to a beach totally naked? This beach is certainly weird. Although there are many more nude beaches in the world, Haulover Beach in Miami, Florida is the most popular.

This one mile-and-a-half (2400 m) long beach is located in Haulover Park. Nothing to worry though, going to this beach naked is legal which means that it is officially recognized and approved by the government of Miami-Dade County. This unique beach is located near 10800 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach in Florida, USA.
