Here’s a list of the most notable and remarkable highways in the world.
Highways are of great importance. They make transportation and communication faster and more efficient but oftentimes they claim thousands of lives every year.
1.) Yungas Road: World’s Most Dangerous Highway

North Yungas Road, which is located high in the Andes Mountain of Bolivia, is famous worldwide and regarded as “The Words Most Dangerous Road”. This 61 km long highway leading from La Paz to Coroico is legendary for its extreme danger. About 200 to 300 travelers were killed annually along this deadly road or Death Road for short. It is also known as Grove’s Road, Death Road, Road of Death, Coroico Road and others.

The South Yungas Road or Chulumani Road connects La Paz to Chulumani and stretches about 64 km long. It is also considered to be nearly as dangerous as the north road.
2.) Big Dig: USA’s Most Expensive Highway Project

The project was estimated in 1985 at $2.8 billion making the Big Dig the most expensive highway project in the U.S. As of 2006, over $14.2 billion had been spent in federal and state tax dollars.

According to an article in The Boston Globe, the project all in all will cost an additional $7 billion in interest bringing the total to a jaw-dropping $22 billion.
3.) Pan-American Highway: Longest International Highway

Pan-American Highway is an international highway that connects many countries in the Americas. The highway stretches nearly 25,000 kilometers and is the world’s longest “motorable road”.

It is discontinuous due to the significant gap in it in Panama where the rainfall is immense and the terrain is entirely not suitable for construction of highway. Central Panama and Colombia are connected by airline transportation and ferries.

I have driven the 401 highway many times and the Trans Canada highway from Ontario to British Columbia twice. Of the roads you have shown here I would not want to attempt the Yungas Road in Bolivia.
Very impressive article.

We lived in Texas for a while and I have driven on the Katy Freeway and it is not fun. This was an outstanding and interesting article. Well, well done, my friend. Oh, you got me thinking about the Beltway that circles around the DC area in Washington, DC. We were stationed there for three years. Now that is a terrible think to drive on, I hated it.
