Passport Requirements for the Caribbean

Travel to the Caribbean is a popular destination to enjoy the clear, blue sky, white-sand beaches, tropical breezes and clear ocean waters. Departing from the United States to enter any of the Caribbean destinations require proper travel identification for legal entry into the Caribbean islands.

Air Travel

United States citizens are required to present a valid U.S. passport or two forms of original identification, one of which must be government-issued. One form of identification must show proof of citizenship to the United States. Acceptable forms of ID include a birth certificate and a driver’s license.

Cruise Travel

Cruise passengers must also present two forms of original identification, or their valid U.S. passport.

Pre-Departure Requirement

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection requires that all cruise passengers board the ship one hour before departure time. This is required of all cruise ships departing from U.S. ports. A full list of all passengers and crew members is then submitted to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

New Passport Card

Sea and land travelers can apply for the Passport Card, which is valid for entry into the Caribbean islands. Its use is, however, restricted from air travel. It can replace presenting a U.S. passport when traveling to the Caribbean.

Passport Card Fees

The Passport Card costs $45 for adults and is valid for 10 years, and $35 for minors under 16 years old and is valid for five years. Current adult passport holders can apply for the passport card by using the Passport Renewal form and paying the $20 renewal fee.
