Preventing jet lag from settling in on your trip
Are you feeling fatigued after a long trip to Europe or going from East coast to west coast? Does not getting the right sleep when you are at your destination confuse and make you feel sluggish and not yourself here are some pointers to keep in mind before you travel to help keep jet lag at the airport.
- Shifting your body clock two or three days ahead before leaving and adjust your watch to your destination time. Then start adjusting your habits to that time including when you sleep and eat to help your body adapt to the new time zone.
- Circulating by walking up and down the aisles of the plane as much as possible to stretch your back, arm and leg muscles. When sitting squeeze a rubber ball to stimulate circulation which helps muscles relax, leaving you less fatigued after your flight.
- Sipping lots of water before, during and after a flight. Cabin air is extremely dry and many experts speculate that dehydration is leading cause of jet lag.
- Taking Melatonin instead of prescription sleeping pills which do not give you restful deep sleep. 2.5 mg of Melatonin a half hour before taking off.
- Skipping a nap: tempted to nap once you land? Staying active is important in helping the body adjust to new time zone.
Note: it generally takes the body biological clock approximately one day per time zone crossed to adjust.
