Travel Meaningfully

Themed travel, as opposed to general globetrotting, will be the big thing this year. Whether you want to shop, party or do something meaningful — perhaps drinking in a vineyard with a master of wine or horse-riding across remote parts of India delivering books to schools — there is a wealth of opportunities waiting beyond the limits of our city for those with a taste of adventure.
Natural born killer
Fancy getting up close and personal to a killer whale — or even swimming right next to one? From the Norwegian town of Tysfjord in the Arctic Circle, orca (whale) experts mount expeditions aboard little boats to observe the whales. Watch these expert hunters round up fish and hit them with their tails before feeding.
Retail fun
A 15-year expert of the fashion industry, Nathalie Beurg runs personalised VIP shopping trips in Paris, Barcelona and London. Trips are tailored to individuals and destinations, and Beurg will meet clients before a spree to work out their lifestyle, desired look and budget.
Fiesta
In one form or another, there’s somebody kicking up their heels somewhere nearly every day of the year around the globe. Someone somewhere is having fun. For music lovers, the Java Jazz Festival runs between 2 March and 4 March in Jakarta while Glastonbury rocks between 22 Hune and 24 June. For culture watchers, there’s the arts, cinema and thetre festival at the Venice Biennale, which stretches from June to November. And if you are tired of the traditional Christmas holiday, try the annual camel wrestling championships in Selcuk, Turkey, which are held every Decemeber.
Less is more
Paying good money to be fed on little more than herbs and water for a week may not seem like your ideal holiday. However, those who have experienced an extended fasting session at the Atsumi Healing Centre in Phuket, Thailand, are raving about it. It could be just what you want — to slim down and look fabulous in a matter of days.
