How to Pick a Travel Agent for Your Walt Disney World Vacation

Hints and tips for picking the right travel agent to book your Walt Disney World Vacation.

If you have decided that you need a little extra help in planning your Walt Disney World vacation, you might want to use a travel agent.  But before you go online and search for travel agents in your area, you might want to consider what makes a travel agent good for your Walt Disney World vacation.

Never use a travel agent that charges you any upfront fees.  Travel agents make their money off commissions paid for by hotels and others in the travel industry.  Note, the exception would be for booking airline tickets—airlines no longer pay a fee to travel agents.  Because travel agents do a lot of research and work for you, however, some will charge for cancellations or certain changes.  Not all do.  It is necessary to ask up front, what fees, in any, you will incur under what circumstances.

It is extremely important when booking a Walt Disney World vacation, you use an “Authorized Disney Vacation Planner.”  Not everyone can say they are an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner.  These agencies are generally Disney Specialists, that is, they deal only in Disney vacations.  The licensed travel agents have attended the College of Disney Knowledge and have received certification from Walt Disney Inc, although are not an employee of Walt Disney Inc.

The travel agent will need to know all your information upfront in order to find you the best deal.  Be open and honest with your travel agent—they won’t judge you.  Once your travel agent books your Walt Disney World vacation, your travel agent owns your reservation.  You will not be able to make any changes—another important reason to make sure your travel agent has all the important information.  You want the best deal possible, and a good travel agent wants to make sure you get the best deal possible.  It’s important to note that some individual travel agents are Authorized Disney Vacation Planners, but usually not an entire agency.  For example, this is especially true of AAA Travel.

Be careful on how your payments are processed.  .  A reputable travel agency will not pay for your vacation out of its own accounts, but process your payments with Disney immediately—all payments will be made out to Disney or processed directly with Disney.  To protect yourself, it is best to choose a bonded agency.  Also, do not pay with cash—always put your payment on a credit card so that you have the added protections that a credit card will give you .

There are many excellent Authorized Disney Vacation Planners out there.  Among those that I recommend (in no particular order) are: Small World Travel, The Mouse For Less, Magical Vacations, and Magical Memories Travel.
