How to Travel with Young Kids

Ever find it hard to travel with the little ones? Here are some tips.

Are you just about to take that road trip that you’ve always dreamed about, but don’t know what to do with your little kid? With just a few things, you can keep them happy and quiet throughout the whole ride! Here are some things to bring on the trip:

  • A computer, or DVD player.
  • A few picture books, or coloring books (remember crayons!)
  • Your child’s favorite stuffed animals or toys

  • Snacks! Candy, cereal, or fruit snacks are a good choice. Remember to bring lots of water! Juice boxes work very well, too.

Now a few things to do:

  1. Play some quick games, like finding animals by alphabetical order, or finding letters on road sides (may not work for little kids who do not know their letters)
  2. Always stay on snack duty. If your child is looking a bit thirsty or hungry, always offer a few snacks. If you have many children, make sure you split the snacks fairly. If you don’t, your children may be fussy about ‘ I didn’t get that many!’ or ’ He got a different type of fruit snacks!’ You could keep a chart about who gets what snack at what time.
  3. Let your child take a few naps. The vacation will definitely be a bit tiring, so make sure your child gets lots of sleep. Bring a few pillows, or some blankets, as well. If you don’t want to add to the load, jackets work very well, too!
  4. Take out the computer, or DVD player. Let your child watch some movies, but not too much. Most DVDs usually come with games, so let your child play a while with that. Not too long, though, because computers may rot eyes!
  5. Keep your child entertained with the toys and books. Kids who have nothing to do with eventually resort to whining, therefore making your trip a very miserable one.
  6. You’re on the road! Let your child check out for the scenery. What about a game about who can spot the most critters?

Note: If traveling on an airplane, ask the assistant about special items for kids. Some companies offer candy bars, and cool toys. They sometimes offer private movies! Bring lots of gum for your kids (and you!) to chew during the take-off and landings. Children become VERY whiny when their ears are about to pop. It’s definitely not a good sensation!

I’m sure it’s good advice Smarty.
I wouldn’t know–avoided kids all my life.
I’m sure I’m far worse than any of them.

“Computer may rot eyes” :D In the car your children wont have opportunity to play with a laptop, I bet. If he/she can turn the computer on, he “became” already adult and wont cry all the time, so why not let them see the landscape?:)
