Extraordinary Street Vendor Foods: All Served on a Stick

by lanne on 02/12/08 at 9:09 am

Move over Iron Chefs, and make room for The Wooden Chefs. Street vendors who serve all of their culinary creations on…you guessed it. A Stick.

Squid On A Stick

Don`t bother looking for a hot dog vendor in most Asian cities. Instead, find a street vendor, select your squid and it will be freshly grilled for you…on a stick. Can anyone tell me where I can find a McDonald’s?

Pizza On A Stick

These treats found at Toronto`s C.N.E. give new meaning to “think outside the box” Slices of pizza are deep fried on a stick. I`d try one of these if there was a paramedic close by.

Cheesecake On A Stick

Move over BaskinRobbins These are actual slices of cheesecake, dipped in chocolate and then frozen. If I absolutely had to eat something frozen on a stick: this would be it.

Pancake and Sausage On A Stick

Perfect for those lazy weekend mornings when you can`t stand the thought of trekking all the way to the IHOP or the local Denny`s for breakfast, Jimmy Dean has just what you need. Frozen pancakes and sausage on a stick. No tray required. Do people really buy this stuff?

Fish On A Stick

Holy Mackerel! Now those are what I call fish sticks!! Just select your fish and your choice of beverage from one of these Japanese street vendors and you`re good to go. I wonder what the response would be if these were served in school cafeterias instead of traditional fish sticks?

Deep Fried Snickers Bar On A Stick

Yes, you read correctly. Deep Fried Snickers Bars! As the only living human that does not like chocolate, I just can`t figure this one out. I can feel my arteries hardening just thinking about it.

Deep Fried Cheese On A Stick

This is where my knees get weak. Cheese on a stick. Food doesn`t get any better than that! I live a long way from Cedar Point Park, and I hate crowds but I would go there just to eat this cheese on a stick.

Squid on a stick is actually pretty delicious. Another good Asian treat-on-a-stick is choco-bana, which is basically a banana dipped in chocolate with some sprinkles on it. Wonderful summer fair fare.

Squid on a stick…don’t dis it, that actually made my mouth water. Ika (squid) and tako (octopus) are two of the best things about Japanese cuisine, whether as sashimi (it’s boiled and cool, not raw), takoyaki (fried octopus balls, DELICIOUS!), in stir-fries, dim sum, or even in the Japanese version of calamari, in which whole little squids are fried in tempura batter.

Don’t worry-I really don’t like most chocolate as well (choco-flavored is good, but the real stuff is icky). But deep fried batter covered Oreos rock. And yes, I’ve seen them on a stick as well. They taste like chocolate cake.

I was unaware that there are that many foods that can be, and are, served on a stick!

I remember when I took my son to Sea World in San Diego, we found giant pickles on sticks sold as snacks. After that, he claimed Americans were geniuses! So funny. He does love pickles. Great article.

Now, I could go for the pizza on the stick and the snickerbar. Sounds good to me but I think I will skip the squid if you don’t mind. Take care,Ruby

The two that sounded good to me were cheese and cheesecake on a stick. I bet none of them are healthy.

Thanks for an interesting read.

Take care & God bless.

Very interesting. LOL. How I wish we have this in Malaysia. The most famous “stick food” here is Satay (er..meat on stick?). Oh, and we also have other types of “Stick food” such as fish balls, sausages, vegetables, etc.

I could really go for the cheese or cheesecake on a stick right now and it is too late to eat before bed. Dang it! I am going to have nightmares of chasing after these cravings and never, ever catching them to eat.

God Bless,

I actually have had many of the ones listed here, they’re all really good. Except for the fish sticks, nothing personal against the stick, I just don’t like fish in general.

In India we get crushed ice with some sweet syrups in it, its called ‘baraf ka gola’ (Ice ball) in a stick. Its quite similar to slush (which comes in a cup), but its more fun to eat it (ice) on a stick than drink with a straw!! You’ve got me craving for some food on a stick now…

Not so new. Popsicles, fudgesicles, ice cream bars sound familiar? Corn dogs? Shish kebabs? Haven’t had one but they also make fried twinkies on a stick.

Not a fan of cheese on a stick, but I love(d) the corn dogs at Cedar Point. They’re the only form of hot dog I’d eat anymore, but alas, I’ve moved far from Ohio.

Surprised there isn’t more stuff from the minnesota state fair in this list, freaking everything is served on a stick there. They’ve got some stuff on this list such as deep fried candy bars and cheese on sticks, but they’ve also got things as weird as stroganoff on a stick (with dipping sauce). Then there’s corn on a stick, giant pickles on sticks, and a bunch more i can’t recall because I haven’t been to the MN state fair in a year or 2 (I’m sure there’s a handful more new on-a -stick creations there by now, a couple pop up every year, and most make a perennial showing after their debut. I think we may have created the deep fried candybar on a stick, and it’s spread many other places by now)

I grew up an hour away from Cedar Point-their cheese on a stick is the best! Still as good today as it was when I was in high school twenty years ago.

It’s one of my family’s favorite things when I do a “stick” dinner. If you can make it on a stick, we have it for dinner that night. You end up getting creative in finding things to put on a skewer. We’ve done corn on the cob, pizza rolls, various meats (to grill, not raw..gross!), desserts such as rice krispy treats, cheesecake squares, etc. It’s a hit with kids, I’d recommend it!

Mmmm – cheesecake on a stick – heaven. As for the deep fried Snickers – I can remember working with a lovely lady who insisted on having a Snickers bar each day which she used to dunk in her mid-morning coffee. I hated her – she had a bar a day and was one of the skinniest people I knew!
