The lovely-looking and astonishing island of Diego Garcia contains some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. This 60 kilometer long island which is located in the Indian Ocean is covered in luxuriant tropical vegetation. The island nearly encloses a lagoon that is about 19 kilometers long and up to 8 kilometers wide. The island is also notably captivating for its white sand beaches.

It also contain some of the best beaches in the world like Whitehaven Beach, a lovely place that is unique for its sand which is almost 100% pure silica giving it a bright sparkling white color.

For the record, the white sands of Whitehaven Beach were used in the construction of the world renowned Hubble Telescope. All of the sand of this 6 kilometer beach stretches along the Whitsunday Island is made up of coral from the Great Barrier Reef.

When coral broke off in storms, it turned white as it died, then was deposited on a small mound under the waves. Over millions of years, more dead coral piled up and rose above the sea and turned into some of the purest white sand.
