Wouldn’t It be Nice to Quit a Job and Travel?

When you travel for an extended time, you learn an enormous amount of things. Things that will serve you in your working life when you get back. Long term travel can actually help you boost your career.

Crazy thought, right? To just leave all the well known everyday duties and go on that dream journey of your lifetime. Maybe together with a loved one. Maybe with your whole family.

That’s what we did! That’s what many of our friends did. They just quit a job they had to do something more with their lives.

A Canadian family with 4 children, close friends of ours, left their old life and went on a 6 month biking tour around Europe.

Some other friends, a Swedish family, went away for many months as well. They started out by picking grapes in Southern France and continued to the Pyrenees in Northern Spain where they spent the winter teaching people to ski.

They all got memories and experiences that they’ll be having for a life time. Experiences that also will serve them in their studies, in their careers and in their lives in general.

To quit a job and go traveling doesn’t have to mean you put your career at risk. It can actually be quite the opposite.

Taking some time off to do some extensive travel, really gives you many advantages:

  • By leaving your old job (permanently or just for a while) and your working responsibilities, you’ll be able to let go, to relax and to get perspective on your life. This will help you to see things in a different way. You can get ideas about how to do things differently and also get plenty of inspiration for starting a business of your own as well as improving your old if you have one.
  • You’ll be exposing yourself to new environments, new people and new ideas to fill up the space you create when you let go of different obligations. You’ll be more open to new impressions and to think out of the box.
  • You’ll be practicing and learning many skills. Things that really can be an advantage when (if) you’re back in your work life and career again. Extended travel will help you strengthen your capabilities to be more flexible, to plan, organize and to negotiate. You will improve your ability to be self sufficient and to improvise. You’ll learn to deal with people from different backgrounds and from different cultures. World travel is of course also a perfect opportunity for you to learn a new language!

These are all things that can be of great value for you in any working situation. If you also consider the globalization of the economy, you realize even more how valuable some travel experiences can be.

So, to quit a job and go traveling for a longer period of time doesn’t have to be the end of your career. It can actually be the beginning! To go on a journey can be the starting point of creating the work and the life you really want.

To take a break and travel for an extended time can be the best way to take you out of a life full of things and situations that doesn’t fulfill you anymore.  It can help you to start creating the dream life which is a reflection of who you really are and what you really want in life. Extended world travel can help you to more fully be the person you want, and have the capability to be!
