Write Travel Articles About Home

by Lucas Dié on 17/05/10 at 3:01 am

Travel articles are amongst the most read articles, as our friend martie points out in her recent article. Travel articles are about beautiful and interesting places. Does that necessarily mean these places always need to be away from home?

Martie recently published her article: What Makes Travel Articles So Popular. Read the article if you haven’t done so already. Then follow me in this.

Some of us haven’t travelled at all or not a lot. Many of the places we have travelled to are places so well known that writing about them might mean we don’t have a lot to tell about them that is new or exciting. And most of us forget that there is one travel destination where we are an expert in: Home.

Writing travel articles about home does seem a bit weird, I admit. And quite frankly, isn’t it a boring place to be? That’s why we are looking forward to go somewhere else on holiday, right? Wrong. The places we go on holiday to are home to so many other people, who might just be dreaming about a holiday where you live.

I often noticed that when you live somewhere, you instantly start to ignore what is around you. It’s like a program in your brain that makes you put off visiting beautiful spots and interesting sites. They are there anyhow, and there is so much else to do, all the time. Visiting them later will do. Writing travel articles about home will take you out of that mould. As an added plus, you can illustrate your article with your own pictures.

It is an adventure, discovering your home anew. And you have the advantage of being the uncontested expert for the area. After all you live there and have access to all the information you want. And you might be surprised how much more there is to you home area than you thought.

If you are a bit of a history buff you might discover that what people believe about the history of the place you live in and its real history might be quite different. Local legend usually is stronger than historical facts. Telling the locals that they are wrong doesn’t make you many friends, but bring it into an article and it makes interesting reading.

If you have a problem seeing the good points (and don’t tell me there aren’t any), think about what you would show to a friend who came to visit. After all, your article doesn’t have to fill a four week holiday. It is entirely enough if whatever the activity you have to tell about takes a half an hour’s time.

Once you have started charting out your surroundings, you’ll find that there is a surprising lot going on that will interest somebody, if not everyone. And the latter is impossible to achieve no matter what you write about.

Thanks for the mention in this article. I also think the best travel articles are about the places you are most familar with…after all how else can you tell people about those little hidden away sites and great places to eat if you are familar with them.
