10 Things You Didn’t Know About Canada

by lanne on 13/08/07 at 5:29 am

Although I am a Canadian, I came across these facts that I didn`t know but thought were interesting.

  1. Approx. 89% of Canada is not habitable, because of extreme climate conditions.
  2. Newfoundland is the only province that does not have an Indian reserve.
  3. Yonge Street in Toronto is the longest street in the World. (It also goes far past Toronto. I live 45 min. North of T.O and live on Yonge St)
  4. Canada has six time zones.
  5. With over 2 Million lakes, Canada has the largest amount of freshwater in the world
  6. The oldest program in Canadian broadcasting history is” Hockey Night In Canada”. At first it was on the radio in 1931, and in the Fall of 1952 the first TV ice hockey game was broadcast nationally on CBC. It is still being produced weekly in both English and French .
  7. The coldest temperature ever recorded was -63C (-81.4F) in Snag, Yukon on Feb 3, 1947.
  8. Basketball: now a favourite in the U.S. – was invented by Canadian James A. Naismith , who was born in Almonte, Ontario in November 1871. After studying at McGill University in Montreal,Quebec he became an instructor at the International YMCA Training School in Massachusetts, USA. where he came up with the idea for basketball. The first basketball game was played in 1891.
  9. Canada is the world’s second largest country , but houses only 27 million people – making it rank only 28th in population.
  10. Five pin bowling was invented in 1909 by Canadian T.E. Ryan.

#1 isn’t terribly accurate. 89% of Canada might not be suitable for crops, but the Inuit enhabited the area by other methods – fishing, etc. In modern days you could use greenhouses – though on a larger scale than the experimental one on Devon Island. And of course anything from Las Vegas in the desert to Alert in the arctic can be supplied remotely.

#3 is a myth. The street ends just north a Newmarket. A branch of it runs off to the west, but doesn’t quite connect to the Young Street that runs north from Bradford. You can check it out on Google Maps.

Left out: Canada leads the industrialized nations of the world in toaster-related deaths.

Canada’s population is 33 million and change. I don’t know if that changes its ranking but its another two Torontos added to your figure.

Ooooh! Pleeeeeeeeeaaase!

Statistically speaking, 89% of Canada is not suitable for crops. Argumentatively speaking is not what the writer was trying for.

Younge Street was considered the longest street in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records until not long ago and it held the record for many years. This then, is not a myth but a revised decision.

Bicker

looks like you just like to bicker about anything. who cares it isnt a big deal unless you make it one

Ah, I see.

Post a myth, and call it a fact.
When someone points out that it’s a myth, say that they “just like to bicker.”
Right. Gotcha.

I never knew any of that about Canada! Thanks for enlightening me ;)

Yes, the fact about Canada’s population, as earlier stated, is outdated. The latest census, taken earlier this year, put it just past 33 million. I’m sure the official numbers are on some government site.

From someone who cannot spell all that well and conveys their views with a 10 year-old mentality, I’m quite content to admit that I am Canadian and one with a rather large brain.
Think before you speak or better yet, learn to write what you think with a little intelligence!! Canda sux? Omg

According to the Government of Canada, your factoid #5 is actually incorrect. “Brazil is the country with the most renewable fresh water. Canada is third after Russia.” Source.

Canadians are the most arrogant people I’ve seen on the internet. I’ve never met a Canadian in real life but what I saw online just makes me feel sick about Canadians and Canada. This is just disgusting.

Another fact is that baseball was first played in Canada, and a Canadian is thought to have invited it.

I’ve been to Canadia a few times. It’s like a whole different country up there. Here are a few more facts that I’ve read from reliable sources: –Murder is illegal in Canada –Canada is known as “The Maple Leaf State” –In Canadian units Canada is actually a larger land mass than the USA –The capital of Canada is called Canada City –The North American Free Trade Agreement mentions Canada in several clauses. Enjoy these fun facts about Canada

To: A Foreigner.
I do not know, or care where you are from. However, I am quite sure that wherever you are from, you have made your people proud with your splendid lines of what I conceive to be hatred. You admit that you have never met a Canadian, yet you are sickened by us because we are arrogant. I think that you have mistaken inteligence for arrogance, my friend, and by writing the kind of crap that you wrote shows that you wouldnt know inteligence if it jumped up and bit you in your home town!!!

Bravo Lanne

Your right, maybe this Foreigner is from Mars.
One who judges an entire country from online comments alone, is not worthy of acknowledgement.
The internet I’m sure is 40% arrogant comments.

Im pretty sure however, the capital city of canada is Ottawa
theres no such thing as canada city, never heard of it,

Shaunie

Aug 22nd, 2007

Canada is size is inversely proportional to the number of who care about it.

Shaunie

Aug 22nd, 2007

Of course I mean “Canada’s size….”

Pancake Man

Aug 24th, 2007

Canada is pretty flat too.. maybe it’s a pancake also?

Pancake?????????????????

Aug 26th, 2007

Anyone who believes Canada is flat has either never been there, only visited the prairies, or is somewhat thick. The Rocky Mountain range runs through western Canada and Ontario and Quebec are known for their ski resorts. Even the prairies are not that flat from central prairies north. Know what you are talking about before you open your pancake hole.

All I can say is “WOW”. I’m Canadian and couldn’t believe what I just read what that “Foreigner” guy wrote. I’m totally shocked. I imagine there are ignorant Canadians but to be so rude to judge a whole entire country and over 32 million people for a few bad comments on the internet is the most ridiculous thing I think I ever heard. Anyways being from Canada myself and having wrote a similar article I have to say at least you did a good job. The facts are clear and not misrepresented. Good job keep up the good work.

Canadians are wonderful, warm intelligent and funny – they have nothing to prove to anyone
I HAVE met several Canadians and their humour and sense of fair play is always apparent and they get my jokes!

Plus .. they’re all hot .. every last one of them .. I don’t know what is in that fresh water of theirs but they should keep drinking it !

and yes I am Aussie .. let the insults begin

Hey, A Foriegner, that is just troll bait. We Canadians have every reason to be arrogant and smug. We are usually too modest and don’t sing our praises. These 10 things are hardly bragging they are interesting facts. I’m sure you could post your 10 things you didn’t know about Detroit.
