Hiking in Arizona

Tips and trails to follow and take while hiking. What to wear, what to eat, what to have to make your next hike fun and safe.

  • What to wear. Wear SPF 30 sunscreen. Banana boat is a good one to use. Wear a thin long sleeved shirt, pants, good hiking boots/shoes and hat. Also, it doesn’t hurt to bring along some bug spray just in case you run into some mosquitoes which tend to be near water and in higher tree lines.
  • What to eat. Bring a backpack that holds 2-3 liters of water. Bring some beef jerky, power bars, and cliff bars to keep your energy up. Keep yourself well hydrated.
  • What to bring. Bring a pocket knife, flash light, map, compass, waterproof matches, whistle, and minimum first aid. You never know what’s going to happen when you’re hiking in the mountains so be prepared.
  • Emergency signals
  1. Distress- 3 evenly spaced signals given within 30 seconds. Repeat as required.
  2. Acknowledgment- 2 signals given in quick succession.
  3. Return to camp- 4 evenly spaced signals given within 30 seconds. Repeat as required.
  • Places to go. Sedona in Arizona is a great place to visit if you get a chance. A must see and hike place would be Oak Creek Canyon in Coconino National Forest. There are beautiful sights to see and creeks to cross. It is recommended you stay on the path as there are tons of poison ivy and poison oak as well as alongside the trail. Touching unknown plants is not recommended. Here’s more information on Oak Creek Canyon.

Also, bring your camera, you won’t want to miss a thing!
