Beautiful Route One Pacific Coast Highway Big Sur Waterfalls

Route one runs along most of the coastline in California and is known as the Pacific Coast Highway for a long section around Big Sur and is one of the most beautiful scenic roads you will ever travel and there are some fantastic waterfalls along this magnificent road.

All these beautiful and unique waterfalls are located off Route 1 the Pacific Coast Highway along California’s coastline including Big Sur.

Alamere Falls

Beautiful Alamere Falls drops right into the Pacific Ocean along Wildcat Beach in Point Reyes National Seashore which is located along Route 1. A la mer means to the sea in French which certainly applies to this scenic waterfall. Alamere Falls requires a hike to see it in person. McWay Falls

McWay Falls is another waterfall that drops into the Pacific Ocean and it is located right along the Pacific Coast Highway in Big Sur where there is a parking area for viewing the falls. McWay Falls can leave you breathless as it gracefully falls 80 feet into the ocean. For more photos and information about McWay Falls click here.

Limekiln Falls

Limekiln Falls is a fan type waterfall that drops some 100 feet along Limekiln Creek in Limekiln State Park. The park and falls are located about 2 miles south of Lucia along the Pacific Coast Highway between Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and Salmon Creek Falls in Big Sur. In addition to fanning out Limekiln Falls drops beautifully over moss which delights some people here.

Pfeiffer Falls

Pfeiffer Falls drops some 60 feet in several strands in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park which should not be confused with Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park where McWay and Canyon Falls are located. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is about 12 miles north of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park along the Pacific Coast Highway.

Canyon Falls

Canyon Falls is a 30 foot waterfall located along a tributary of McWay Creek in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park along the Pacific Coast Highway near McWay Falls. Canyon Falls is only a short hike inland from the McWay Falls parking area.

Russian Gulch Waterfalls

Russian Gulch State Park is located right on Highway 1 about two miles north of Mendocino and six miles south of Fort Bragg in Northern California. The park contains pretty waterfalls set amongst the lush greenery and redwood trees native to the area.

Mount Tamalpais Waterfalls

Mount Tamalpais State Park is located right off Route 1 in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Muir Woods National Monument area. The park contains redwood groves but is best known for the magnificent views you can see from 2,571 foot high Mount Tamalpais which include San Francisco and the surrounding areas, the Farallon Islands in the Pacific Ocean and occasionally the snow-capped Sierra Nevada’s.

Mount Tamalpais State Park also contains a number of pretty waterfalls all along its numerous creeks.

Salmon Creek Falls

Salmon Creek Falls drops some 120 total feet right along Route 1 the Pacific Coast Highway as the highway goes over Salmon Creek about 8 miles south of Gorda in the southern end of Big Sur. There is a parking area for the falls on the north side of the bridge.

Andrew Molera Falls

Andrew Molera Falls drops some 70 feet in Andrew Molera State Park which is located about 20 miles south of Carmel along the Pacific Coast Highway and about 4 miles miles north of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and Pfeiffer Falls.

Big Basin Redwoods Waterfalls

Big Basin Redwoods State Park is located about 45 miles south of San Francisco and contains a number of lovely waterfalls like Berry Creek Falls pictured above. The park is only a couple of miles inland from the Pacific Coast Highway though you have to drive a little further than that to access the park from Route 1.
