A California Girl at Heart

A look at California through my eyes.

Sometimes I think California gets a bum rap. It’s where I was born and raised, and while I no longer live there, I miss it terribly. California is a mecca of natural beauty which is often overshadowed by the glitz and glamor of the Hollywood lifestyle. Here’s a little glimpse at some of the places I’ve visited in my home state. After viewing them, I think you’ll agree, California is truly beautiful.
Yosemite National Park

Visited by over 3.5 million people each year, Yosemite National Park is recognized internationally. It sits amid the Sierra Nevada Mountains and is known for its granite cliffs, waterfalls, groves of Giant Sequoias and clear streams. Yosemite was a favorite subject of environmentalist and photographer Ansel Adams. When I lived in California, Yosemite was in my back yard.
San Diego

While vacationing in San Diego, I visited the San Diego Zoo and spent my days sunning at Pacific Beach. The above photo shows the beauty of the city skyline at night.
Mt. Shasta

Mt. Shasta is part of the Cascade Mountain Range and is unique because it is not connected to any neraby mountain. It peaks in the middle of miles of level ground.
“Lonely as God, and white as a winter moon, Mount Shasta starts up sudden and solitary from the heart of the great black forests of Northern California”…Joaquin Miller, poet
San Francisco

San Francisco, the city by the bay, is a favorite for recording artists like Tony Bennett and Journey. The above photo was taken at dawn. If you’re interested in history, I wrote an article entitled San Francisco: City with a Past which might nterest you. San Francisco also happens to be the home of my favorite NFL football team.
Mojave Desert

California has vast desert lands, the largest being the Mojave Desert. If camping is what you’re in to, the desert offers plenty of wide open spaces. I personally love to ride ATV’s, and the desert is the perfect place to ride.
A Love of Nature
Because I grew up in California, I have an overwhelming love and respect for nature. By simply traveling an hour in any direction, I could choose from mountains, ocean or desert. If I could use just one word to describe California, diverse would be the word I’d choose. From the music, to the food, to the people, to the landscape, California has something for everyone. I love California and I hope after seeing it through my eyes, you’ll come to love it too.

It sounds like a beautiful state, Joni. We have had quite a few adverts for California on British TV lately so we are being kept in touch. A very good and informative article.

Thanks for all the comments. And to BoJack, yeah, I wanted to mention Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear as well as Tahoe City, Lake Tahoe, Big Sur, Monterey, Carmel and a bunch of other places. But Cali’s so big and beautiful, there was too much to mention in one article. Perhaps a part two at a later date.

Beautiful pictures and descriptions. That’s how Florida feels to me. It may not be as scenic as California, but it has its special places too.

Lovely, lovely pictures and your descriptions of the diverse landscapes, regions, etc. is well done. You captured the natural beauty of California in words and by your choice of photographs. My favourite parts of visiting California is the great outdoors, the cool cultural feel of San Francisco and other cities (e.g., Huntington Library in LA), and cool vibes of cities like Santa Barbara and San Diego. There is so much more than movies led people to believe!
I think Nevada has a similar stereotype. Except that it is simply a state filled with smokey casinos, gambling, and illicit activities. Of course, real life isn’t like how Hollywood or the Strip are portrayed in the media (since those are small aspects of two cities). Plus, there are beautiful natural and urban elements in NV as well.
Can’t wait for my next trip to California! I hope you get a chance to visit you home state soon, too.

It’s true, sometimes the publicity of this state is only about Hollywood and makes you forget the beauty of its natural landscapes.

Beautiful pictures. I used to live in Auburn, California, where the scenery was breathtaking. The only scenery that could compete with California is the Deleware Water Gap.
