Beautiful Waterfalls of Big Basin Redwoods State Park in California

This awesome 18,000 plus acre California State Park contains a number of beautiful scenic waterfalls.

Big Basin Redwoods State Park was established in 1902 which makes it the oldest state park in California. In addition to the fantastic old growth Coast Redwood trees found here the park also contains many beautiful waterfalls.

Located just inland from California’s coastline about 45 miles south of San Francisco, Big Basin Redwoods Park can be reached along the coast from Route 1 the Pacific Coast Highway or inland off Highway 9 by taking Highway 236/Big Basin Way. There are four main waterfalls in the park and three of them are located along the Berry Creek Trail.

Berry Creek Falls

Berry Creek Falls drops 70 gorgeous feet along Berry Creek and is reached by hiking along the Skyline to the Sea Trail. You will pass many magnificent redwoods along the way. Berry Creek Falls is arguably one of the most beautiful waterfalls in California outside of the Yosemite Park waterfalls rivalling the two Pacific Ocean tidefalls McWay Falls and Alamere Falls and also rivalling Burney Falls which Teddy Roosevelt called “The Eighth Wonder of the World.”

Sempervirens Falls

Source

Sempervirens Falls is a lovely 20 foot high waterfall that tumbles around lush green ferns and down a rocky cliff into a pretty pool below along Sempervirens Creek. Sempervirens Falls is easily reached along Sky Meadow Road right off Big Basin Way.

Silver Falls

Source

Silver Falls is a 60 foot high waterfall along a fork of Berry Creek about 1/2 mile up the Berry Creek Trail from Berry Creek Falls.

Golden Cascade Falls

Source (It’s slippery here and I would not suggest trying this)

The Golden Cascade Falls is located just upstream from Silver Falls. Here the water flows over two 30 foot steps. This is a unique waterfalls due to the orange color of the cliff face the water flows over giving it its “golden” color. The color is caused by the iron-oxide in the rock and the algae growing on the rock.

There are many other minor waterfalls in Big Basin.

As well as the magnificent trees the park is named for.

I like the second to last shot. It almost looks like broccoli. lol My mom had been here twice, of course she’s been everywhere so I’m a bit jealous.
