Burney Falls Eighth Wonder of The World

Teddy Roosevelt called Burney Falls the Eighth Wonder of the World.

Burney Falls is a spectacular 129 foot waterfall along spring fed Burney Creek located in McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park in northern California northeast of Redding.

Teddy Roosevelt the 26th President of the United States and a great lover of nature called Burney Falls “the Eighth Wonder of the World”.

Burney Creek is formed from springs in the park so Burney Falls is a spring fed waterfall and thus never runs dry and almost continuously runs at 100 million gallons per day even during dry spells. Much of the water flowing at Burney Falls appears to simply flow out of the rock or strata layers.

This effect is from the springs which supply water for the falls from many different outlets above and within the falls. The area above the falls was formed by volcanic activity and consists of porous basalt rock which retains water from rain and snow melt underground and then releases the water through springs. The mineralized water creates a beautifully colored pool below the falls.

Being in California, Burney Falls has some Hollywood notoriety as it appeared in the film Willow which was directed by Ron Howard and produced and co-written by George Lucas of Star Wars fame.

Burney Falls was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1984. You can reach the falls (which are visible from the parking lot) and McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park along Route 89 northeast of Redding and just north of Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Not sure I would call Burney Falls the Eighth Wonder of the World but it is a gorgeous place.

Quite the most interesting of your waterfall series, I think. Fascinating how the water seems to flow right out of the rock.
