Taking A Smoke A Mile At A Time.

It’s the open road, a destination with an arrival, and a friendly hand to open and close the door. The story begins as I journey on a cross country Greyhound Bus trip to Los Angeles, California in September 1983. It all started at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City at Gate 65 for a 6:30 PM departure. My luggage was at my side awaiting a Greyhound bus to approach the gate for my 4 days journey on vacation, and my Grandparents seeing me off. The bus had arrived at the gate, and the Greyhound Driver was beginning to open the door, and asked all passengers to have their tickets out for inspection, and that the bus was a thru bus to Los Angeles, California. The bus was now loaded with passengers and cargo, and we were backing out the gate enroute to the Lincoln Tunnel, and I am looking forward to experience what this great country of America has too offer.

Let’s go fast forward, and we have arrived in Texas, a place called Big Springs. It is a small town with a small bus depot. A passenger boards, and starts a conversation with the passengers that were already on board. It is now night time, and the young gentlemen explains how he told his wife he was going for a smoke, and he would be back in 15 minutes. 15 minutes was up long time ago and his wife has an idea, he is not coming back. We had rode on the bus for 3 days already. Don’t let Jerry Springer find out, as the gentlemen could be a guess on the show at Greyhound’s and mine expense. The young gentlemen never explained as to why he was running away from his wife, but you can be sure, his journey was going to be worthwhile. He was bound for Los Angeles. Could it be, he was looking for fame and fortune or perhaps space too get his head together. Whichever comes first. Whatever the event, the love of his life left behind to relish what was no more too his marriage, and perhaps start a whole new chapter in his life. Whether it be on the road or off the road, this saga is not over, but the young gentlemen is the only one that knows the beginning and conclusion. This is a road without end.
