Stephen P Leatherman went from humble marine scientist to ‘Dr Beach,’ when asked by a former student to pick his favourite United States beaches. His top ten lists of America’s best stretches of sand are eagerly awaited every summer. Now in its 18th year, he reveals 2008 ‘number one beach’.
Caladesi Island, in Clearwater, Florida, has been voted the best United States beach for 2008!
According to Dr Beach, Caladesi Island has some of the finest sand in the world that is so super white; you need to wear sunglasses to look at it. The water is a very deep green, turning to blue, and is relatively shallow.
You can walk a good 100 metres before it gets too deep. The water is measured for quality twice a week and to get there you have to travel by pedestrian ferry. There are hardly any buildings on Caladesi, but has mangrove trees full of big white egrets, blue herons and pelicans.
