A Trip to Kennestone Hospital

by Ruby Hawk on 07/06/09 at 3:29 am

A day at Kennestone Hospital for a test on Lionel’s new valve.

We are on the fifth floor of Kennestone Hospital’s parking deck looking down on Cherokee Street. Lionel had a aortic valve replaced two years ago and his doctor wants to check it out. It’s a beautiful sunny day to be out but not a fun day for Lionel. He is ready to get this procedure over with.

This is one wing of Kennestone Hospital as seen from the fifth floor of the parking deck. It has changed from what it was some years ago when there were steps going up the hill to the front entrance and a parking lot was located in front of the hospital. Now it covers several lots and the former parking lot. You can easily get lost here. And I often do.

Lionel was taken into a cubicle to prepare for his procedure. While he was away I waited here for him right across from this sink. It has a sign over it as you can see, reminding all personnel to wash their hands every time they go in to see a patient and when they leave the patient. I waited here at least 30 minutes and not one person washed their hands at this sink. Nurses were going in and out all the time I was there. To be fair my sister said they probably had hand sanitizers in the cubicles but I don’t remember looking for those. Anyway he didn’t pick up any infections while there and his doctor said his valve was working just fine. So you can imagine what a relief that was for  both of us.

We are coming off the loop now and on our way home.It has been a nice day after all. I am driving and Lionel is a little whoosey. He will rest today and tomorrow and be ready to get on with his life. It has been a nerve racking day. We weren’t sure what to expect and it’s a big relief to have this over with.

Well, Well, this is not the picture I wanted but since it’s here I’ll leave it. In this picture we are at Gore, just coming up to Taylors ridge on our way to Summerville. It has nothing to do with our day at Kennestone. We travel up this road to visit my sisters and for most of our family dinners. It’s a nice quiet relaxing drive with very little traffic on the road. You can see the “Visit Rock City” sign off the side of the road. We used to have the “Burma Shave” signs from one end of  27 highway to the other. Times change but at least we still have Rock City.

Hospital procedures are no fun. Glad everyone is O.K. Thanks for the pics. I’ve been to Rock City but many years ago. Isn’t that where you can see seven states if it’s not foggy?

Interesting to see. In the UK I had alcohol gel bottle in my uniform pocket, maybe that is what your nurses had. Glad all went well.

I’m glad all went well for Lionel. Sometimes the waiting and dreading something can be the worst part. That is a beautiful view from the window, and a lovely picture at the end–even if it wasn’t the one you intended.

Thanks guys for going along for the ride. I appreciate your support so much.

Betty, I had the neck artery done several years ago and it went well for me. Now the doctor is watching the other one. I dread this surgery just as much, I’m sory to say. I hope yours goes as well as mine did.

B, Burma Shave Advertisments were signs on all the roads some years ago. I wish I could think of one but I can’t. They had parts of a phrase from one sign to the next. It kept you anticipating the next sign. Kids loved it.

Hi Ruby,

Glad he is doing well. Your sister and Glynis are correct we have hand gels on the walls and can use them as many as three times before we have to wash our hands. It saves a bit on the skin. Still after a 12 hour shift at my hospital the skin under my wedding ring is peeling off and the pad of my fingers are rough.I remember Rock City, Lookout Moutain and Ruby Falls. I went there as a child and later Craig and I took a fall trip there just the two of us. We had a great time. Do you remember the tall birdhouse that had Rock City written on them? Better go. This was a great piece. I love your day in the life of type stories.

Read you later, Pam

Thank you all for sharing our day at the hospital. We were certainly glad to have it over with and be on our way home. But it was good to have you along.

Ken,Rock City is where you can see 7 states from the top of the cliff. Of course its just rolling mountains you are seeing.

Pam, I remember the bird houses but I think they went the way of the Burma Shave. Haven’t noticed any in a long time.

Unofre, the picture does look gloomy. I think it was a cloudy day.
